In James Westley-Bell's latest article he takes a critical look at LLMs and what innovation-driven companies must do to survive in the age of LLMs. Whilst many of us have encountered LLMs and genAI tools like OpenAI's GPT-4o, which are trained on publicly available data, it is crucial to understand what LLMs are not. They excel at interpolating within the bounds of their training data. But they are not adept at extrapolating beyond this data into truly novel (yet realisable) concepts or ideas, or interpolating where there is limited, inconsistent, or inaccurate data. The areas of greatest potential for radical innovation and competitive advantage cannot be accurately predicted by LLMs trained on publicly available data alone… Read James’s article: https://lnkd.in/gAXhRsSm #LargeLanguageModels #genAI #Innovation #AIagents #AI

Advancements in AI will revolutionise scientific discovery and transform industries, but critically, what would be needed to nurture and safeguard such advances? For countries to stay at the forefront of this revolution will need focus from the Government down. The UK Government’s All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI (APPG AI) recently met in the UK House of Lords, to hear evidence from industry experts including Capgemini's Richard Traherne who shared our joint vision for ‘AI in Science’. The meeting was focused on the potential for AI to revolutionise scientific discovery and transform industries and what is needed to nurture and safeguard these advances. Richard’s presentation was based on our own experience of applying AI, in particular in our Engineering Biology labs in Cambridge. He shares his five areas of focus in this article. https://hubs.li/Q02ZHRL90 Capgemini Invent #artificialintelligence #ai #engineeringbiology #syntheticbiology #innovation #bioeconomy

We’re thrilled to add our congratulations to the winners of the $10M XPRIZE Rainforest competition, aimed at enhancing our understanding of the rainforest ecosystem. The challenge tasked finalists with surveying 100 hectares of tropical rainforest in 24 hours and producing the most impactful real-time insights within 48 hours. Teams also needed to demonstrate the scalability of their technology and maximize performance on biodiversity surveying and producing insights to meet the prize criteria and effectively disrupt the current biodiversity assessment landscape. CC supported the XPRIZE judges by assessing the AI elements of the finalists’ solutions on criteria such as scalability, robustness and reliability. 🥇 1st place: Limelight Rainforest. Their sensor platform is designed to be deployed via drone to the rainforest canopy, the most under-researched layer of the rainforest, to collect bioacoustic data, images of insects, and insect specimens that are attracted to the technology’s novel light trap. Dr Carolina Sanchez, Principal Assurance Technologist at CC, said: "Limelight Rainforest has provided two great innovative breakthroughs using AI technology for biodiversity insights: their data pipeline optimisation approach and acoustic tracking methodology for birds. Labelling data for training AI models is notoriously time-consuming and labour-intensive. Limelight's solution to this challenge was very innovative: their custom software for labelling data massively accelerates this process, paving the way for impact at scale. Their sound analysis using AI for location tracking methods and technology for rainforest bird populations is also outstanding." 🥈 2nd place: Map of Life Rapid Assessments. Their solution uses a fleet of autonomous UAVs to collect audio, visual, and eDNA data. This is combined with innovative on-site eDNA processing methods and a suite of AI approaches for fast and efficient local biodiversity inventories. 🥉 3rd place: Brazilian Team. Their drones and ground robots collect data and samples, and apply innovative technologies and solution to deliver rapid and accurate biodiversity assessments, especially from remote or difficult to access geographic areas. 🏅 Bonus prize: ETH BiodivX collects eDNA, images, and sounds using autonomous drones, deployable sensors, and satellites. ETH BiodivX analyzes this data in real-time using a backpack lab and advanced AI algorithms, then visualizes it through a dashboard to generate insights. It has been a privilege to support XPRIZE in this challenge and inspiring to see the extraordinary levels of innovation that the teams delivered. Once again, our warmest congratulations to all the teams who took part in the Rainforest challenge. Last week we asked you which major external factors you thought would impact the adoption of DER (Distributed Energy Resources). From your responses, most of you thought the largest influence is economic, with social being of least concern. DER is one of many solutions that will help us address the challenges of climate change. If you have not already seen the report – here is the link https://hubs.li/Q02Yf8r40 The report captures the findings from a select group of influential stakeholders from the energy industry invited to a Grid Tech Roundtable, hosted by Cambridge Cleantech to delve into the topic. This report draws together the key challenges and solutions from the roundtable discussions and prioritises those into actionable recommendations in terms of impact against development risk. #Climatetech #Climatechange #Cleantech #energy #nationalgrid #futuretech

Imagine our excitement when we were invited to create an interactive demo to bring artificial intelligence to life for children. We worked with the team at Cambridge Science Centre to help in their mission to break down the barriers to accessing STEM. The best way to learn is to have fun! So we set about creating an experience that would inspire children aged 8 to 12 with the thrill of artificial intelligence – and also to teach them about how it all works. After all, the curious young minds of today will be the deep tech innovators of tomorrow. Discover the collaborative journey that CSC and CC took to bring AI to life for kids. https://lnkd.in/gJZexmUN #STEM #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Education

Keratoconus, a degenerative condition that distorts the cornea, affects as many as 1 in 450 people. It is often difficult for an ophthalmologist to ascertain exactly what a patient can, and cannot, see. We wanted to find a better way to assess a patient’s visual acuity. A hugely helpful step forward would be to utilise an accurate digital 3D model of the patient’s cornea and optically simulated, so that changes could be tracked. Using a lens that replicates a patient’s keratoconic cornea, we’ve created a keratoconic camera that shows exactly how a person with this condition experiences sight. The keratoconic camera helps communicate the problem, while scans could be used to produce a digital reconstruction of a patient’s vision to record any deterioration and more importantly provide a measure of the impact of the deterioration.
