#NewWords to watch 👀🗣️ Last week, we announced 'manifest' as our #WordOfTheYear2024. This is a word with a 600-year history that shows how meanings of a word can evolve. But, what new words have we seen in 2024? 👇 All year round, our #CambridgeDictionary editors track the English language as it changes. Here are some of the newly emerging words we've been tracking this year: 📱 quishing: the scam of phishing via QR code. 💼 resenteeism: to continue doing your job but resent it. This blend of resent and absenteeism is appearing in business journalism. 🏋️ gymfluencer: a social media influencer whose content is focused on fitness or bodybuilding. 🍸 cocktail party problem (also cocktail party effect): the difficulty of focusing on one voice when there are multiple speakers in the room. This term from audiology is now being used with reference to AI. 🔋 vampire: a vampire device or vampire appliance is one which uses energy even when not in use. This is a new, adjective sense of an existing word. Could these new words be future #CambridgeDictionary entries? We're watching their rise to see if they’ll make the dictionary. Every year, #WorkInPublishing Week provides our colleagues with a special chance to meet local students and give back to the community ✨ On Monday, nearly fifty students from across seven local secondary schools in #Cambridge came to our offices to learn more about opportunities to work with us in the future! The event was designed to build connections between #Cambridge and our local community, and to provide interested students with the confidence to stay in touch and take part in other career events that we will be hosting throughout the coming year. Students took part in workshops which helped them prepare their personal statements for future applications and practice their interview skills. The morning ended with every student having a mock interview with our colleague volunteers. Thank you to the local schools, students, teachers, and partners involved, as well as all our colleagues who volunteered their time! 👏 🔗 Read more about our Work in Publishing Week activities: https://cambrid.ge/3Z8FJvY #WeAreCambridge #PursuingPotential #CommunityEngagement The Publishers Association

Christine Ozden's message from #COP29 is clear: education is not just part of the climate solution—it is central to it. 🌎 Our Global Director for Climate Education had a prominent role in three events on Education Day at the global climate conference in Baku this week. Christine co-chaired an ambitious greening education discussion with ICESCO, and participated in two additional panel events focused on legislating for education reform to foster a green skills revolution and sustainability in higher education. In the middle of the action, we asked Christine about her key takeaways and what she hopes to see from next year's conference. Why “manifest”? Today we announced #manifest as the Cambridge Dictionary #WordOfTheYear2024. The word was looked up almost 130,000 times on the Cambridge Dictionary website, making it one of the most-viewed words of 2024 as athletes, singers, and entrepreneurs claimed manifesting helped them succeed. But this global trend is highly controversial. To understand why, we spoke to Professor Sander van der Linden , a Cambridge author and professor of psychology at the University of Cambridge. 🔗 Read more about the #CambridgeWOTY here: https://cambrid.ge/4fXSal4 #CambridgeDictionary
