Public sector borrowing reached £17.4bn in October, the second highest October figure on record. This is largely attributed to increased government spending and a challenging economic environment. 𝗨𝗞 𝗩𝗖 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 A recent British Business Bank survey has shed light on the challenges facing UK venture capital firms in the current fundraising environment. According to the report, 25% of UK-based general partners (GPs) have delayed their fundraising plans. Key takeaways from the survey: ▪️ 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻: GPs cite factors such as market uncertainty (with 69% of GPs viewing the UK as a poor or very poor fundraising environment), increased investor caution, and a challenging exit environment (with an 80% decline in UK exits in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023) as contributing to the delays. ▪️ 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵: Despite the slowdown, the majority of GPs (60%) believe that the quality of investment opportunities in the UK remains strong. ▪️ 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀: GPs continue to face intense competition for attractive deals, particularly in growth-stage companies, with 30% of fund managers reporting high competition (up from 16% in 2023).
