Shane McConnell, a 19-year-old competitive diver from Scotland, has made impressive strides in his diving career. In 2022, he won the Scottish Age Group Championship on both the 10m and 3m boards, and in 2023, he claimed victory at the Scottish Junior Nationals. Now competing at the senior level, Shane faces Olympic medalists and world champions like Noah Williams and Tom Daley. He trains tirelessly, honing his skills and building resilience under competition pressure. His goals include retaining his title as Scotland’s number one at the National Championships this December and aiming to qualify for the 2028 Olympics. Capital Refractories is proud to sponsor Shane in his athletic journey, wishing him every success. Shane’s dedication and hard work are inspiring, and we have every confidence in his potential.
Honghe Senior School Project The school spans 210 acres and serves 3,651 students. Located in a subtropical monsoon climate, summer temperatures often exceed 35°C, making food storage, preparation, and dining challenging. The donation from Capital Refractories will fund air conditioning units to create a more comfortable environment for both the staff who prepare and cook meals, and for students to relax and enjoy their meals.
This World Prematurity Day, we’re pleased to share details of Capital Refractories' donation to the Premature Baby Foundation (PBF) in Taiwan. The PBF is dedicated to providing quality medical care for every premature baby in Taiwan, while also raising awareness of prematurity as a serious health issue and educating the public to help lower premature birth rates. Our Taiwan branch’s Sales Coordinator, Erika, has a personal connection to PBF. Her daughter, Chantel, was born as a very-low birth weight preemie, weighing just 695g. Thanks to the hospital’s support and a referral to PBF, Chantel received essential home care services and follow-up programmes after her discharge. At 18 months, Chantel was diagnosed with developmental disorders, and with PBF’s assistance, a paediatric rehabilitation doctor arranged an Early Intervention Programme. Chantel has since received physical and occupational therapies, making tremendous progress.
Strike Out Cancer is a two-day tournament held in Gardendale, Alabama, USA, where children aged 5 to 14 years compete in both baseball and softball. The primary goal of the tournament is to raise crucial funds for the American Cancer Society, supporting its fight against cancer. Since its inception, the event has grown in both size and impact, and 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of this inspiring initiative. This year alone, the tournament has raised over $240,000, an incredible achievement that Capital is proud to support as a sponsor. The event not only raises funds but also fosters a sense of community and sportsmanship among young players. Our very own Kenneth Caddis, Production Manager at our USA facility, plays an active role in the tournament as the assistant coach for the 7/8 U Orioles baseball team, where his son KJ is a proud member of the team. The dedication of local families, volunteers, and sponsors like Capital makes this tournament a special and meaningful way to unite people in the fight against cancer. As the tournament reaches its 10th year, Strike Out Cancer continues to make a lasting impact, bringing together children, families, and communities for a common cause, proving that through teamwork and determination, we can make a real difference.

The Louise Smalley Challenge Walk is a 40-mile (and a bit) award-winning challenge walk that raises funds for local charities and good causes. Organised by the close-knit community of Whitwell in North Derbyshire, the walk is held in honour of Louise Smalley, who tragically passed away at a very young age after a battle with illness. Since its inception, the annual event has raised over £280,000 for a wide range of charitable organisations, making a significant impact in the region. This year, the nominated charity to receive the donations from the walk was Just Good Friends, an organisation that supports those who are socially isolated. A total of 115 people participated, including Michael Nesham from the production admin team at our Clowne branch. The walk began at 4am, with participants determined to raise as much money as possible for this worthy cause. After hours of dedication, the last walkers returned around 7pm, and the event successfully raised an impressive £16,128.78. The Louise Smalley Challenge continues to inspire people year after year, bringing the community together for a shared purpose of making a difference in the lives of those in need.

The key topics of these sessions included: Training teachers on sustainable menstrual hygiene practices, enabling them to better support and guide students. Educating students on menstruation, hygiene practices, and reproductive health. Promoting a positive, stigma-free school environment where menstruation is openly discussed. Equipping both teachers and students with the knowledge and resources needed to manage menstruation hygienically and comfortably.
