Carers of West Lothian is a well-established charity offering a range of services developed to meet the needs of unpaid carers and disabled people in West Lothian. It was started in 1990 by a small group of people, themselves carers, who recognised the need carers had for information and support. They were concerned about the lack of support in West Lothian and used their own experience to set up a service to support carers like themselves. Today, through our support, we aim to help every unpaid carer and disabled person in West Lothian to live their lives the way they choose.

Great to welcome members & supporters to the Carers of West Lothian’s Dare to Care event today. We completed our AGM, launched exciting new projects & heard powerful experiences from unpaid carers, young carers & disabled people. Shout out to the staff, volunteers & supporters for organising & participating in the event. Thanks to the trustees, led by Chair Ann Pike, for their vision and strategic direction.
Today celebrates the 30th birthday of the #NationalLottery and we want to say #ThankstoYou for all of the lottery players! We feel very lucky at CoWL to have been so supported by The National Lottery Community Fund Scotland over the years, funding various projects and endeavors. Most recently allowing us the funding to support our counselling service and the post of our health development worker. Here's to them!

We have come to the finish line! 🏎 Talent On Board 2024 ended yesterday with an unforgettable session with Tejesh Mistry - The Chief Executive of Voluntary Health Scotland on Financial Oversight Functions of a Board Trustee with a highly engaging case study break-out session and discussion time. Some key terms that were discussed: 1️⃣ Going concern 2️⃣ Management Accounts 3️⃣ Restricted 4️⃣ Cash Flow 5️⃣ Audit among others It was absolutely stunning to see the cohort members discuss and juggle ideas on how best they can be positioned to ask the right questions as they pursue their goals of becoming board members. Last week we had an amazing time with Ann Pike - Chair, Carers of West Lothian once again where she delivered a session on all you need to be prepared in getting that first role as a board member. In what seems to be an insightful session, the cohort feels ready to take on the new challenge as they aspire to diversify Scotland's third-sector organisations. Huge congratulations to - Oluyemi Olususi Gurudatha Pai Gayatri Vijay Kale Drashti Shah Isaiah Ediae, MICA MICEN MCICA Abi Odedeyi Amarachi Nwankwo Mosunmola Raji William Horsu Olufemi Odofin Anusha Adige for maintaining high standards of engagement during this 12-week accelerator programme. In partnership with The Advice Shop, financial gains worth £255,902.67 were secured for 37 people and families between July – September 2024. We’re thrilled to be able to facilitate this awesome support to carers and disabled people in West Lothian. That means we’ve supported people to ease the financial pressures of caring responsibilities by accessing almost half-a-million quid in the last six-months!

We had a wonderful evening last night at Howden Park Centre as we introduced families to the information they need to support them Through Transitions. Huge thanks to all who attended - our community partners and special thanks to Julie from ARC Scotland, Greig from Social Work and Zainab from Caesar & Howie.
In partnership with the Advice Shop at West Lothian Council between April-June 2024, 31 unpaid carers and disabled people in West Lothian were supported to access their entitlements to help them live independent lives. Entitlements have included Child and Adult Disability Payment, Carers Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Council Tax Reduction and many more. This is a fantastic outcome for carers and disabled people, ensuring they receive the financial support available to them. Carers accessing support from our partnership with the Advice Shop said they felt more informed and had improved emotional wellbeing through reduced stress and anxiety.

As we finish our first few days back to school, we thought it would be important to highlight some important facts about young carers. Many young people do not realise that they are young carers, especially if they have been providing caring duties for most of their lives. It can be hard to balance caring alongside school work and socialising, which is why it is key that young carers are identified and supported.
