Helping companies and investors navigate the growth transition
About us
We are a team of highly-qualified advisers with many years of experience leading or working with ambitious growth companies. We work in partnership with small and mid-market investors, Chairs and management teams, helping to inform decision-making and find solutions to problems arising at the interface of strategy, organisational and people. We aim to create major impact with only limited injections of our time. Challenges in these areas often require teams to "diagnose, crystallise and make it happen". Sometimes external help is needed and over the last decade clients have entrusted us with over 400 assignments. We tend to work more on the ‘how’ than just the ‘what’ and have supported in the following areas: > Management due diligence > Strategy development > Organisation development > Top team development > Senior hire assessment > Management referencing > Private equity support We don’t offer standard, off-the-shelf, advisory ‘products’. We spend time understanding the situation and working out the best approach. Projects are tailored to the specific context and requirements, incorporating appropriate frameworks and tools to support as required.

Adding new roles into the top team of a growth company can be tricky, partly because designing those roles involves fuzzy boundaries, titles which can mean different things and a need for some roles to add breadth to a team and others depth. The blog below offers some suggestions on principles to guide those judgement calls and a practical process to sort out roles in an existing team.

Over the course of 2024, I have been finalising a handbook which is designed to be an practical desktop reference guide offering guidance for investors covering: Assessing management teams pre-deal Setting things up for success immediately post-deal Making executive appointments Creating effective boards and management teams Building organisations for scalability and exit How private equity houses can make it easier for investors to handle team and organisational issues We are offering a complimentary advance copy to investors who can give us ten minutes to help update a piece of research I carried out in 2004 (refreshed in 2014) about the ways in which investors handled people issue pre- and post-deal in the mid-market. That involves input into a questionnaire looking at how things have evolved (and improved?) over time. You can access the questionnaire here https://lnkd.in/eMZRTzwW In return for your help with that research (preferably by 15th November), you will receive two things: The handbook (the questionnaire asks for the best address) The results of the research in due course (we have 55 responses from 36 PE houses right now, so we should have plenty of insight)

Governance can add value to a company or inadvertently confuse management, crowd out other important stakeholders and consume scarce bandwidth. Our latest blog explores the factors that make the difference between these two outcomes.
Unbalanced: Why private equity governance and strategy-making can go wrong — Catalysis Advisory

There are helpful guidelines which can inform the way that groups – and in fact private equity houses – can think about not only how to add value to subsidiary companies, but even whether value is likely to be added in net terms, after taking into account time and other costs of governance. There are lessons from the corporate past which are probably helpful for investors to reflect on.
