Rain Newton-Smith had the privilege of participating in a roundtable at No.10 with Keir Starmer and subsequently attended the ‘Plan for Change’ speech at Pinewood Studios. Setting an ambitious target for delivering 150 major new economic infrastructure projects is hugely welcome and will give a major confidence boost to investors. However, underpinning all of the government's mission is the need for investment, the vast majority of which must come from the private sector. Government will need to work with business to restore confidence and deliver a blueprint for growth and investment. Stability is a pre-condition, not a blueprint for growth.

Growth then remains steady at 1.5% in 2026. 🔍 Autumn Budget measures expected to weigh on private sector activity. 📈 Inflation: Expected to stay above the Bank of England’s 2% target through 2026. 💷 Interest Rates: Gradual cuts anticipated, reaching a terminal rate of 3.5% by early 2026. 🛒 Consumer Spending: Modest growth due to slower real income increases. 💼 Business Investment: Growth weighed down by higher employment costs and crowding out from government investment. 🚀Boosting business growth with long-term investment certainty Innovative startups and scaleups are the driving force of the UK economy – but looming changes to the Enterprise Investment Scheme and Venture Capital Trust schemes risked cutting their momentum short. Thanks to our advocacy, HM Treasury has extended the sunset clause on these schemes for an additional 10 years, ensuring vital support for businesses looking to scale. This extension provides much-needed certainty for businesses and investors alike, but our work doesn’t stop here. We’ll continue engaging with HM Treasury to push for a review of the existing scheme limits, making them even more effective for the future. Our members have told us that the UK needs a modern industrial strategy that drives growth through innovation, sustainability, and public-private partnerships. We listened; and have submitted over 90 recommendations to the government on our members’ behalf. Learn more in our Blueprint for UK Competitiveness and in our full response to the Invest 2035 green paper, published earlier this week. Both are available here http://bit.ly/3V0EHRe. The Blueprint for UK Competitiveness isn’t just a policy document. It’s a practical guide for government-industry collaboration. It suggests that the government prioritise industrial strategy both in the 2025 Spending Review and in how it allocates capital spending. We believe this will help boost growth, attract private investment, and build the pro-business environment you need to grow. In the Blueprint, we highlight 5 key economic shifts the UK must turn into opportunities for growth, along with 5 policy tools to make that happen. 5 Critical Economic Shifts: Fund competitiveness through agile capital markets and fiscal policy Deliver the UK’s net zero goals Evolve the UK’s labour market Harness digital technology Balance economic security with international trade policy 5 Policy Tools: Focus on strengthening the key drivers of economic growth Evaluate the UK’s resources and national assets Minimise opportunity cost and make the most of opportunity Set broad, strategic goals rather than favouring industries or sectors Consider the impact across the entire UK Strong leadership and commitment from both the government and industry are key to making the UK's industrial strategy work. These efforts will help grow the economy through innovation, sustainability, and collaboration. 🌍💼 #UKGrowth #IndustrialStrategy #Innovation #Sustainability #CBI24
