Controlling numerous robots and automated guided vehicles (AGV) reliably is a key benefit of 5G network deployments in smart manufacturing. Unlike Wi-Fi, the use of 5G enables a deterministic network where performance can be guaranteed to be sufficient for these complex, physically large, and often mobile tools to be safely and efficiently managed. In ZTE Corporation’s factory, multi-robot precision assembly, AI machine vision, and AGV’s combine to enable more customisable production where a single assembly line can make multiple types of server. Each server can be built to a different specification, as required. 5G connects devices across the factory to an intelligent operations center that manages the entire process. Algorithms drive factory management decision using data collected from across the factory and data on production requirements. This integrated approach also minimizes energy usage helping achieve sustainability and cost targets. As a result, ZTE reports that efficiency has been boosted by 125% and delivery times have dropped 36% compared to traditional production methods.
