What is this? This is the elderly gentleman I saw climbing out of his van at 6.45am this morning at Eastbourne Pier, strut down to the sea in a pair of bermuda shorts and then go for a swim!! My first thought was ITS OCTOBER!! Brrrrr My second thought was - this is what real DETERMINATION looks like. If you approach every opportunity and challenge with the same resolve there is nothing that you cannot overcome. Just when you think you have reached the limit of what you are capable of remind yourself that this is just the beginning. Take inspiration from those around you. They too have faced challenges. And don't be afraid of the sea! It is there to remind us that we are only human.

Here's to an exciting new Chapter..... It was my pleasure to join the illustrious crew of the Worshipful Company of Carmen last night and make the acquaintance of the other 10 new members. I last attended a dinner as a guest of a liveryman about 10 years ago and it was rather a stuffy affair. The fabulous committee Joy Laister and recent masters to include David Pugsley have worked tirelessly to create a fun and inclusive environment that everyone feels they can be part of. Congratulations to them for changing the culture and making the Carmen a great company to be part of. I have to thank Richard Turfitt for proposing me and Greg Powell FInstTA, Gary Titmuss FInstTA, Alan Whittington FRSA, FInsTA, FIC and Rena Verlander for keeping me company at the after party. If anyone ever wants to know the history of the City of London there is no better mine of information than Alan Whittington!

I’ve been called to a Public Inquiry. Do I really need a solicitor? As operators receive the dreaded call up letter from the Traffic Commissioners office, they often find themselves asking whether they really need professional help. With the inevitable stress and time involved in the process people often say to me “I’m just going to go down there and admit it all”. Is this going to be a productive approach? As soon as the public hearing appears on the ‘applications and decisions’ portal, those required to appear before the Traffic Commissioner are inundated with marketing literature from solicitors and other professionals offering their services. This creates another level of complexity. How should operators choose who to represent them when there is such a vast array of solicitors and professionals out there to choose from? What will it cost and are these people going to make a material difference to the outcome anyway?
