CEDR was delighted to partner with the Al Tamimi & Company Law Firm on Tuesday the 12th of November during Dubai Arbitration Week (DAW) to sponsor a roundtable discussion on 'Developments and Opportunities for Mediation in the UAE and GCC'. The panel was moderated by David Holloway and panellists were Wolf von Kumberg, Christine Maksoud, Laila ElShentenawi, Zaza Johnson Elsheikh, Adam Peters Tania Jarjur and Rozana Al Tayyar. The panel explored: 💡 Legal foundation for mediation in the UAE and more broadly the GCC 💡 Development of mediation in the renewable energy sector 💡 Use of mediation in the ADGM courts in Abu Dhabi and at DIAC in Dubai 💡 Blending of western forms of mediation with traditional forms of Sulh in the Middle East. The general consensus was that mediation now has a legitimate framework in the GCC and that it has garnered a lot of interest. This must now be converted into actual use by the users and the law firms. It was agreed that capacity for mediation had to continue to be built with the training of mediators, mediation advocacy training for lawyers and general knowledge building for users. Government and Institutions should be encouraged to continue to support mediation as a credible process to be included in the ADR toolkit.
