ACE Seminar Series: The Monsoon Revolution in Bangladesh - are there lessons for future mobilisations against state capture and corruption? 📅 5th December 2024 ⏰ 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM UK Time 🔗 https://bit.ly/aceseminar4 This online ACE seminar will be hosted by SOAS University of London. Our speakers Sara Hossain and Anti-Corruption Evidence (ACE) Research Consortium - SOAS programme director Mushtaq Khan will talk about the recent Monsoon Revolution in Bangladesh that led to the dramatic overthrow of long-standing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina which was the result of a steady decline in the rule of law, leading to outright capture of economic and political institutions by the state. Sara will bring her years of international expertise as one of South Asia’s most experienced human right’s lawyer to speak about the interconnectedness of state capture and human rights infringements and the institutional checks and balances that could control this in the future. Mushtaq will talk about how the successful uprising was the result of years of unbridled corruption enabled by repression and a police state. The seminar will highlight collective action problems during popular uprisings against corrupt leaders and the challenges of effective responses to state capture. It will be chaired by Pallavi Roy, research director of SOAS-ACE.

ACE Seminar Series: Tackling Corruption at the Sector Level 📅 Date: 7th November 2024 🕔 Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM GMT 🔗 Register: https://bit.ly/aceseminar2 Corruption is complex and widespread, but addressing it at the sector level can provide effective solutions. Join us with Paul M. Heywood (Speaker), Andrew Hayward (Discussant) and Liz David-Barrett (Chair) to discuss the new book, Sector-Based Action Against Corruption by Paul Heywood and Mark Pyman. Paul Heywood will present insights from his newly co-authored book, Sector-Based Action Against Corruption: A Guide for Organisations and Professionals. The book introduces the SFRA (Sector Focus Remediation Action) approach, highlighting four key principles that guide effective anti-corruption strategies at the sector level: - Sector-Specific: Address corruption in individual sectors, leveraging the in-depth knowledge and operational experience of professionals within fields like health, policing, or agriculture. - Focus on Concrete Issues: Identify and tackle specific, manageable corruption problems rather than generic notions of corruption writ-large at country-level. - Remediation: Use a two-track matrix that combines broad political framing with detailed measures to address corruption. - Action: Apply multiple 'lenses' to create a decision-making framework to help determine which measures to implement. This seminar will explore practical applications of this approach and provide a forum for discussing its implications for anti-corruption initiatives globally. Link to book: https://lnkd.in/gYmYAy4E
