Today is the first National Paralysed Bowel Care Awareness Day! It's not only mobility; SCI means bowels can be paralysed too. Bowel care is often neglected in medical settings due to the lack of training opportunities - you would assume that if you're admitted for medical care, there is a basic provision for your bowel care needs. But often, there isn't - only 37% of NHS trusts have nurses that are trained to undertake essential bowel care. People are left to soil themselves, or (in some cases) develop life threatening conditions like autonomic dysreflexia. What are SIA doing about it? 📢We're at the House of Lords later - we look forward to working together with the government on further changes. 🧑⚕️We provide essential care passports for anyone who is concerned about their bowel care in medical settings. 👩🏫Our team offer specialist training to healthcare professionals. We want to help healthcare professionals challenge the bowel care policy at their NHS trust (over half of NHS trusts don’t even have one!) This time next week two of our very brave colleagues Anusha Rangan & Sarah Coxon will have dived into the depths alongside Sand Tiger, Guitar and Black Tip sharks at the Blue Planet Aquarium. Why on earth are they doing this you might reasonably ask? Two reasons: 1. We're all encouraged to push ourselves outside of our comfort zones at CFG and this definitely fits the bill! 2. It's all to raise money for Spinal Injuries Association who support people across the UK living with a #spinalcord injury.
