Last week Dame Sue John, Executive Director, had the privilege of attending Hornchurch High School in Havering to observe a SEND Developmental Peer Review in action. Sue provided us with her reflections following the visit: "It was a brilliant day. Senior practitioners from Babbington Academy and The Mosslands School met with middle leaders, visited a wide range of lessons, and spoke to groups of pupils. They were able to provide invaluable #feedback on the strength of #SEND #provision and #outcomes but also on areas for further #development. The behaviour of pupils was exemplary and strong routines and systems to support learning were in evidence in all classrooms. It was simply a joy to spend the day there and I know that visiting colleagues were able to ‘steal with pride.’" More information about the SEND Developmental Peer Review can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eth6BZhQ

🎟️ On 14 March 2025, Dr Kate Chhatwal OBE, CEO will be joined at the Association of School and College Leaders Annual Conference by Karen Bramwell OBE, CEO, Forward As One CE Academy Trust, Simon Corner, Director of Secondary Education, Wade Deacon Trust, and Amanda Ryan, Headteacher, Hillside High School, Bootle, as they present their workshop -"RISE-ing to the challenge of regional school improvement: What can we learn from powerful collaboration across the North West?" "Since 2019 the Challenge Partners Aspire Hub has provided a vehicle for collaborative school improvement across the North West, under the banner “Looking Up; Looking Out; Looking Beyond”. The Hub has grown to encompass 64 schools and 10 trusts across 16 local authorities. It is jointly led by Forward as One Trust and Wade Deacon Trust, who share a determination to give local children a better future, and the belief that with so much at stake, collaboration can’t be fluffy. In this workshop, we will share how the Aspire Hub has combined wisdom and joint endeavour to achieve more together than any school or trust could on its own. We offer the underpinning principles and methodologies as a template for collaboration everywhere, and the North West experience as a model for the ‘universal offer’ of RISE Teams as they seek to harness and spread the excellence in our system." Last week Dr Kate Chhatwal OBE, CEO, spent four days immersed in the education landscape of the #NorthEast. In her latest blog, which we're pleased to share here, Kate reflects on her experience of the warm welcome she received from schools and trusts across the region, of her exposure to the similarities and differences of challenges faced by educators here, and of meeting the passionate individuals determinedly doing their best for their pupils and communities. Following visits to a number of schools, including examples within Stanley Learning Partnership, Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust, and NORTHERN LIGHTS LEARNING TRUST, it is evident that in the North East, community is strong. It shapes identities and curricula. As Kate herself states, "Place matters". https://lnkd.in/eHHDWmdx #schools #trusts #northeast #education

On yet another glorious day in the #NorthEast I took the train down the breathtaking coast from Newcastle to visit the wonderful St Helen's Primary School in #Hartlepool. It truly is a 'beacon in the community', with a strong sense of place, focus on genuine community engagement, and drive to inspire its pupils to make a positive contribution to society. Before walking round, I asked Head of School Marcus Newing what he hoped I'd see. He didn't point me to initiatives or approaches, but to the pupils - and they didn't let him down. They were a delight - from the confident greeting when I arrived at the gate, to meeting the most recent recipient of the headteacher award, so proud to show us the improvement in her handwriting. Time afterwards with inspirational Jo Heaton OBE enabled me to learn more about work across Northern Lights Learning Trust to ensure their 7 primary and 3 secondary schools (2 dogs and 1 bee colony) 'shine stronger together'. The sense of pride and place, coupled with high aspiration for their pupils and communities shone through everything. I was particularly taken by their developing twist on a pupil passport, which is less giving pupils a list of experiences to tick off and more about equipping them to believe that they can go into any gallery, theatre, university and believe that they belong there. I love this vision of every child feeling as entitled as the most privileged to take their place in a the world and make it better - and look forward to hearing how it evolves.

Yesterday at Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust I heard how they plan to harness data and #AI to create an action-oriented 'vulnerability index'. Working with local tech experts, Chief Standards Officer Glenn Sanderson is developing a tool that will use existing pupil data to build a clear picture of the intersectional needs and barriers faced be individual pupils, as the basis for holistic support to address them. This #innovation will enhance work Director of #SEND Rachael Bowman is leading to 'change the narrative' around #SEND, moving away from static and restrictive medical models to a more dynamic approach designed to avoid the limitations of labelling. I am delighted that Rachael will lead a carousel of practice at Challenge Partners #NorthEast #SEND Conference so other leaders can learn from the approach. I am hugely grateful for how generous Brendan Tapping, Francesca Craik, Glenn and Rachael were with their time and insight in the three hours I spent with them. One LinkedIn post could never do justice to our wide-ranging conversation.
