Amaran 🎦⚠️ If you are a Malaysian, you know that the word Amaran means “warning” in Malay but here I’m referring to the title of a Tamil movie now showing at cinemas internationally. It’s on true-life story of Major Mukund Varadarajan, a commissioned officer in the Indian Army. In the context of the movie, the word amaran means “immortal”. Inspired by Major Dr. Prebagaran Jayaraman (R), I brought my family to watch the movie during the long Diwali weekend. Being the only Malay Muslim family in the cinema, I knew how much we embraced Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I). In my context, Diversity also led to a mixed feeling on my intepretation of the message in the movie as it involves local patriotism, religious extremism, and political conflicts. As a Malaysian, I may not fully understand the complex Indian history, the way my Indian friends understand it. This is where the word “warning” helps me frame my own appreciation of DE&I. This is where Equity in the middle of DE&I plays an important role. In its article in August 2022, McKinsey defines “Equity differs from equality in a subtle but important way. While equality assumes that all people should be treated the same, equity takes into consideration a person’s unique circumstances, adjusting treatment accordingly so that the end result is equal.” Today, I spoke with Elizabeth Pollitt on Inclusive Leadership as part of DE&I practice at Charlotte Sweeney Associates Ltd | B Corp Certified Business. As we co-create cross-cultural understanding of Inclusive Leadership, I feel my experience over the Diwali weekend and the Tamil movie Amaran has further enriched my meaningful appreciation of DE&I.
