⚡ Data is VITAL for algorithm development.⚡ Helena Binetskaya, our Founder and Chief Product Officer talks to why data is so vitally important to any algorithm development, and how it was done at ChestPal. "It is very difficult to get the dataset, specifically for lung sounds. Because, within the state of the art, you do not have clinicians routinely saving lung sound recordings into electronic health records or any system, so you have to create that database from scratch yourself. And then not only have a sufficient number records present, but also label them using expert knowledge. We had a panel of pulmonologists labelling this data and if the same record received the same label from all pulmonologists independently, then that was the gold standard label that could proceed into our training and test data set. Because we had to make sure that all the experts were definitely in agreement to what that sound was." ChestPal were invited onto the Alpha Sophia Spotlight podcast to chat to Paul-Lukas Hoffschmidt. Steve Atkinson, “The legacy in this field is really the stethoscope. I mean, it's been out for hundreds of years available. It really hasn't changed much over the years. It uses a diaphragm which vibrates, which sends sound waves directly to your ears. There are now digital versions of that available which have like an amplification, but they just listen and record sound. ChestPal Pro has digital amplification and listens to the lungs but also detects sounds, and that means categorize the sounds we detect crackles, wheezes and rhonchi. So detecting the sounds which specifically help clinicians hear basically. It's very difficult to hear with the stethoscope and no one really argues with us that it's difficult to hear these sounds. These sounds are very subtle, particularly along sounds and hard to hear. Because they're so hard to hear they can be difficult to categorize. It's the main step to diagnosing the patient that you know, you can categorize it. That helps you diagnose the patient.
