Chopwell Regeneration Group are proud to have today won the ‘Going Green’ award at the national Rural Community Business Awards in London. The award was particularly for the repair-reuse-recycle work our volunteers and staff do at The Regeneration Shop which we opened in Chopwell in March this year, led by the brilliant Hal Convery. Well done to the community of Chopwell for making this project such a success. Thanks also to all our funders who have made this project possible including Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, Barbour Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation Andrew Ballinger (Ballinger Charitable Trust); The National Lottery, Virgin Money Foundation and Lennox Hannay Charitable Trust. About us
Chopwell is an ex-mining village in Gateshead with c3,700 residents. Chopwell Regeneration Group (“CRG”) was founded by residents in 2017 and we became a charity in 2019. Our 8 trustees are all local people who live /work in Chopwell. CRG’s purpose is for our community to regenerate and revitalise our village & improve the lives and life chances of local people. We are doing it in our own way. We have 120 members and 200 volunteers. Until 2021 everything we did was done by volunteers. We now have 5 brilliant staff (Learning and Programmes Manager, Operations Manager, Front of House Manager, Chef and Cleaner). We run a community building on our main street (“The Bank”) which we fully opened in March 2022. At The Bank we have: • a ‘pay-what-you-feel’ café; • a ‘pay-what-you-feel’ community market with fridge/freezer; • events, activities and courses for people of all ages and backgrounds, from our “Code & Create Club” for children aged 7-11 to our “Memory café” for people with dementia and their families, volunteering and work experience opportunities (20 regular volunteers in the café - 25% of whom are aged 16 to 18); • employability training and support, including DWP work experience placements; • rooms upstairs rented to local businesses and social enterprises; and • co-working room with fully serviced desks rented by the day. Our volunteers also run a thriving community allotment. 450+ people a week (all ages and backgrounds) access our services and facilities. . There are challenges in Chopwell where there is a lot of financial hardship and a lack of employment opportunities but there is also enormous pride and passion for our unique village and its history, along with a strong and very determined community spirit. Local people created CRG. Our community is working together to change our future, exactly as Chopwell residents famously did 100 years ago. CRG’s activities and strategies are determined by the ideas and needs of our community.

Our Treasurer Jodie Barwick-Bell CTA TEP was delighted to be on the panel at Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland’s Vital Signs event yesterday, hosted by Newcastle Building Society. Jodie said “The data produced from the Vital Signs research is hard-hitting and highlights the stark differential between the North East and other regions across so many measures. Sadly the data has not come as a surprise - organisations like Chopwell Regeneration Group are seeing the need in our region increasing month by month. The data will be a real help to many VCSE organisations who are seeking funding - it is clear evidence the need is here and now in our region. The Vital Signs event was also an inspiring and uplifting afternoon full of ideas, stories and an obvious willingness to collaborate and partner between organisations. The VCSE community in the NE tipifies the spirit of the north east- passionate, caring, innovative, supporting each other and deeply proud of our beloved region and the people who live here.”
