Earlier this week, Chamber members gathered at our last 1815 Dinner of 2024 at The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle. 🍽 Keynote speaker Iain Anderson FRSA, executive chairman of H/Advisors Cicero, discussed the North East’s significant role in advancing the UK’s industrial strategy. Iain emphasised future opportunities for strategic partnerships, inward investment and the region’s ability to capitalise on its unique strengths. He said: “Every single one of the eight sectors that government is going to focus on in terms of the industrial strategy - they’re all here in the North East." Brilliant event last night on 'Why Does Diversity in Public Affairs Matter?' I had the easy job of chairing, with our superb panellists - Iain Anderson FRSA, Rebecca Deegan, Priyanka Patel, Joel Pearman and Caitlin Plunkett-Reilly - answering the questions. A huge range of issues covered - the 'war on woke', the gender pay gap, diversity in recruitment, social mobility (a personal interest), ethnicity and representation, mentoring and a whole lot more. A shout out to a couple of organisations - Women in Public Affairs (WiPA) and I have a voice CIC - to follow, support and get involved with. Research to check out in the form of Caitlin Plunkett-Reilly's report for the Chartered Institute of Public Relations - 'Fish Out of Water'. And a new campaign to join to get class included in the Equality Act, led by Joel Pearman. Last week I attended the final New Statesman Conference of 2024, their Politics Live Conference which came to a close last Wednesday afternoon! A very insightful conference, with a diverse range of panelists. Topics discussed ranged from the net zero transition, and national security to infrastructure, technological innovation, and healthcare. Across the board, the focus of discussions in panel sessions centered on what the long-term plan is from the Labour Government, particularly across things such as major infrastructure projects and the trajectory for capital investment in the health service. Otherwise there was a strong sense of empowerment for local authorities and local communities on things such as housebuilding and agreement that harnessing technology is key for growth across the board!
