It is with great sadness that we heard of the passing of Charles Handy, one of the most influential thinkers in organisational theory and management, who passed away peacefully at the age of 92. A visionary, philosopher, and author, Handy transformed the way we understand workplaces, leadership, and the human spirit within organisations, leaving an indelible mark on the HR profession and the CIPD community. Charles Handy’s career was marked by his innovative contributions to management thinking, including concepts like the Shamrock Organisation and the portfolio career, which anticipated the gig economy and reshaped how we think about work. His influential books, including The Empty Raincoat and Understanding Organisations, are essential reading for HR professionals. His work is a cornerstone of CIPD qualifications, ensuring that future generations of people professionals are equipped with the knowledge to champion better work and working lives. Handy had an unparalleled ability to distil complex ideas into accessible wisdom, inspiring countless individuals—especially HR practitioners—to rethink their approach to work and life. His advocacy for balancing organisational efficiency with humanity aligns closely with the CIPD’s goals to create a world where work creates value for everyone. Born in Kildare, Ireland, in 1932, Charles Handy’s academic journey began at Oriel College, Oxford, where he studied classics and history. His pursuit of understanding the intricacies of human behaviour led him to work with Shell International before enrolling at the Sloan School of Management at MIT. It was there that he laid the groundwork for his pioneering insights into management and organisational culture. There are few thinkers with such an enduring legacy of wisdom and the CIPD will remember that thinking and the kindness and time that he showed to the organisation and its people.
