A pioneering scheme aimed at encouraging more girls to get involved in coding, technology and engineering is coming to east London. The sessions in Shoreditch are run by Girls Into Coding, founded in 2018 by then 10-year-old Avye Couloute, and supported by funding from City Bridge Foundation. City Bridge Foundation acting managing director Simon Latham said: “It’s really inspiring to see how Avye and her mum have identified a gap in the market and turned it into a thriving social enterprise. “Science and technology are really key subjects for the future and it’s great that these workshops are giving more girls the skills and confidence they need to enter what remains a male-dominated field.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ebWgyrcY

Non-profit Organizations
City Bridge Foundation is responsible for five Thames bridges and is London’s largest independent charity funder.
About us
City Bridge Foundation is a charity set up around 900 years ago for the maintenance of the old London Bridge. Through bridge tolls, rents, bequests and charitable donations, along with sensible investment and management, the fund has grown over the years and now has total assets of around £1.6 billion. Our primary aim remains to maintain our five bridges – Tower, London, Southwark, Millennium and Blackfriars bridges – but since 1995 we have also used surplus funds to award grants to charitable organisations across Greater London. We currently award over £30 million to charities across the capital and have made a further £200 million available in the five years to 2026 to support London’s charity sector. City Bridge Foundation is the working name of the historic Bridge House Estates. From 1995 to September 2023 our charity funding team was known as City Bridge Trust. In September 2023, our bridges and charity funding teams were brought together under a new name – City Bridge Foundation. Our sole trustee is the City of London Corporation – the governing body for the Square Mile. Members of the Court of Common Council – the City Corporation’s primary decision-making body – form the City Bridge Foundation Board which governs our activities.

We are seeking eight Equity Partners who can act as our critical friends, advising and supporting our work processes, our funding policy and our approach to impact and learning. We will meet to share learning, discuss challenges and explore opportunities that can speak to both a singular and intersectional voice for London’s communities, and explore the feasibility for shared ambitions across London. Six meetings a year (up to 2.5 hours). Payment of £300 for each meeting to cover participation, preparation and travel. For this role, we are looking for representatives of organisations with active engagement across London and a focus on a group(s) as defined by the Equalities Act. In most cases, we expect these organisations to be second tier organisations that provide infrastructure support to other organisations and are ‘led by and for’ the communities or groups that they represent. Please submit Expressions of Interest by 10am on Friday, 28 February 2025. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eC7N_7AQ

A Love Letter to Southwark Bridge 💌 This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating one of London’s most overlooked but charming bridges - Southwark Bridge, or as our poet-in-residence Cecilia Knapp fondly calls it, Southy B. Bridges do more than connect places - they hold memories, stories, and moments that shape our city. As part of our #WordsBuildBridges campaign with The Poetry Society, Cecilia reflects on her connection to this quiet, cheerful crossing: "I shouldn’t have favourites I know, Southwark Bridge but I can’t seem to forget the nights I walked across your back oh Southy B — can I call you that?" At City Bridge Foundation, we support London’s communities, culture, and infrastructure - ensuring our city’s bridges continue to inspire and connect people in new ways. Follow along as we share more poetry throughout 2025, bringing a fresh perspective to London’s bridges and the communities they serve. 📌 Which London bridge holds a special place in your heart? #WordsBuildBridges #ConnectingLondon #SouthwarkBridge

O Southwark Bridge, a poem by Cecilia Knapp, City Bridge Foundation poet-in-residence. 🎤✨ Through our partnership with The Poetry Society, we celebrate the power of poetry to transform how we see and experience our city. Poetry connects us - just like bridges do - revealing new perspectives, emotions, and histories in the spaces we cross every day. O Southwark Bridge is an ode to one of London’s quieter crossings—peaceful, beautifully coloured, and often overlooked. "I have heard you called forgotten I’ve heard you called unsung but doesn’t your gentle green sing with the powdery dawn?" Watch the full video on our website and follow along as we continue to celebrate London’s infrastructure, communities and cultural life through poetry. #WordsBuildBridges #SouthwarkBridge #PoetryForLondon #ConnectingCommunities

Hate crime in London: supporting the victims & preventing the crime. In this powerful, short blog, Szymon Glowacki from Protection Approaches talks about his work with community-based organisations in developing new programs to prevent, and support the victims of, hate crime in London. “It is all about partnership, working with organisations, each deeply rooted in their respective communities. These organisations know their communities better than anyone else. They know their challenges, their triumphs, and their fears. “What they often lack, however, is the knowledge, tools, and resource to identify hate crime, to prevent it and support victims effectively.” City Bridge Foundation supports Protection Approaches’ work in this area. https://lnkd.in/dkzBka_J

This spring, we aim to announce our new funding policy, which will shape our future as London’s biggest independent funder for the next 10 years. The new policy will reflect how London has changed due to the significant issues we’ve seen in recent years, with a focus on systems change and tackling the root causes of inequality. We will also change how we fund, with a more flexible, more relational approach to working with our partners. In this video, our chief funding director, Sacha Rose-Smith, reflects on what we’ve learned in 30 years as a funder, how we’ve developed our new funding policy and what happens next.
