  • I was so proud to be nominated for an award in the company of amazing individuals and teams who do such great work at the Corporation!!

View profile for Ian Thomas CBE

Town Clerk & Chief Executive at City of London Corporation. London's lead local authority CEO for economy, employment and skills.

How proud are you of your people? Every day, I see and hear of incredible examples of our teams here at the City of London Corporation going above and beyond to make real and lasting differences to the communities we serve and work with. Yesterday I had the enormous honour of joining over 450 of our people who proudly came together to celebrate each other, to share stories and have their incredible work acknowledged at our annual staff Awards. In a time when we’re increasingly hearing messages of division around the world, at the City Corporation we united and received a record number of nominations. From our Security Team at the Central Criminal Court evacuating 1,700 court users in just four minutes 50 seconds during a fire; our Hampstead Heath Rangers and Enforcement officers dealing with hazardous waste and ensuring a safer environment for the site’s users; our Children’s Social Care Team providing emergency accommodation during extreme cold; plus anti-racism and cultural competency training for senior managers which will be rolled out to all colleagues next year. These are a small selection of the extraordinary achievements we heard about. At the event I quoted the late Helen Keller: “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence”. Seeing our people coming together in our historic Great Hall to proudly celebrate each other has reinforced this message, further instilling in me the positive direction that our organisational culture is travelling. With thanks to our Chief People Officer & Executive Director of Human Resources Alison Littlewood Chartered FCIPD, Kaye Saxton-Lea, Habiba Khanom, Yusra Hassan and the rest of our fantastic Learning & Organisational Development team, along with the countless others involved in putting on the event. And of course, to every single colleague who took the time to nominate, encourage and support the great people that make up the City Corporation and the incredible work they do.
