Updates

  • In an article for City Security magazine, Minister for Security Dan Jarvis highlights to the security sector the importance of complying with the National Security Act 2023 and announces the new supporting guidance. He says: "Some states pose a growing threat to the UK’s security – damaging our infrastructure and institutions, stealing information, undermining our values, threatening their own dissidents living in the UK and manipulating our public discourse. Their methods are expanding, and you have a vital role to play in countering this threat." He goes on to say: "Security professionals have become attractive proxies for those who wish to harm the UK. Private investigators, private intelligence operatives, and close protection officers have specialist skills, access to information, and proximity to individuals of interest that hostile actors wish to exploit." He continues: "It is imperative for those of you working in the security industry to be alive to these threats and take every action to mitigate them. Doing so will help protect the UK and yourself." He adds: "The government has published new guidance online, with resources, scenarios, and questions. These will support you and your businesses to carry out these checks correctly and in so doing protect yourself and the country." • Congratulations to Darren Carter CPP MSyI F.ISRM from Institute of Hotel Security Management who is a top ten finalist in the City Security magazine Article of the Year for his article ''Checking in to the upcoming year" Darren writes: "Despite the multiple serious global issues being somewhat remote from us here in the UK, they are never really far away at all, more so for our vast community of hotels. World events have a direct impact on travellers and, inevitably, their state of wellbeing when they do arrive, some of those having been displaced from their homes by choice or force. Within the world of hospitality, we must recognise and adapt to a rapidly changing set of risks multiple times a day, just simply to keep everyone happy, safe, and comfortable." • Congratulations to Kate Bright, CSyP from The Security Institute who is a top ten finalist in the City Security magazine Article of the Year for her article ''CSyP - more than just letters after your name" Kate writes: "Word is also reaching a wider audience about the rigors of the CSyP process, the collaboration within the Chartered community, and the growth mindset shared by all of us, to make the world a safer place for clients, communities and beyond. Not forgetting the fact that I’ve certainly also benefitted personally from the support, friendship and ‘pay it forward’ mentality of other CSyPs – especially those in the widely varying cross-industry sectors, who are keen not only to refer business, but also to cross-collaborate and signpost to helpful resources and people. This is more than simply letters after your name." • Congratulations to Mike Croll from Buckinghamshire New University who is a top ten finalist in the City Security magazine Article of the Year for his article ''A key security career decision: Should I get a degree or post graduate qualification?" Mike writes: "Security is now a key part of an organisation’s overall resilience and can be a source of competitive advantage. Security demands a range of management skills, contextual awareness, professional knowledge, and an ability to assimilate new technology. "The rate of political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental change is accelerating ever faster. So, if you want to stay relevant you must be able to anticipate and adapt to the increasingly complex and volatile world. "Security professionals are often very good at doing things, but they need to complement their action-driven instincts with analytical and critical thinking skills. The best way of gaining these is through a rigorous degree course. In the future it is inconceivable that anyone without a degree will progress beyond middle management."
