Exploring the True Origins of Online Schooling 📚💻 Did you know that the concept of virtual schools has been around since the 1980s? 📅 While many people think online schooling emerged in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, its roots go much deeper. In 1988, Morten Flate Paulsen authored a groundbreaking paper titled "In Search of a Virtual School." He predicted that distance education would eventually be dominated by virtual schools—a vision that’s now becoming a reality. Fast forward to 2024, and we have a vibrant digital learning ecosystem offering both full-time and part-time options for students around the world—though it’s still not as widely known as it should be. 🌍 In the Class Futures Newsletter, we are trying to highlight this rich history and show how online education is evolving. Curious to learn more? Read the latest newsletter article where we look at the history of the virtual school and explore how they continue to innovate and grow. 📖🔗 [Link to newsletter in comments below] #Education #EdTech

Online Schools in UK (and nearby islands) to note the message from Charlotte Doody about the survey of online schools in UK (and nearby Crown Depedencies). A version of this survey form oriented to international use will be made known to virtual schools across Europe (in the sense of Eurydice countries) before autumn term starts, for a companion paper on virtual schools in Europe for which I am leading the author team. This paper is also destined for the "Education Sciences" Special Issue. There has been no public report on virtual schools in Europe in the last 12 years (since the days of thje EU LLP VISCED project) - strange though this may seem - even alarming to some of us. Finally we are also looking for around 10 exemplar virtual schools selected from high-income economy countries (no more than one from any particular country) which can evidence particular lessons in terms of impact on (or involvement with) higher education institutions, and/or education policy at municipal, state, national or georegional/international level (UNESCO, EU, OECD, COL etc). Suggestions welcome.
K-12 UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man Online school survey launching tomorrow (Deadline: 30th September 2024) We are excited to announce the launch of our online school survey tomorrow, a crucial component of our research paper: "Innovation in Education: Evaluating the Growing Impact of Virtual Schooling Models on Traditional Education in Primary and Secondary Education" Authors: • Charlotte Doody, Independent Researcher, Matic Media Ltd • Jonathan Lloyd, Independent Researcher, Class Futures • Dr Bieke Schreurs, University of Amsterdam This paper will be featured in an MDPI Special Issue. If you are reading this and in the UK, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, please consider doing the survey. It would be nice to be able to add it to the American (see https://lnkd.in/g5xyZnSj ), Canadian (see https://k12sotn.ca/ ), and New Zealand (see https://lnkd.in/g-3X5jQc ) versions that already exist. Now we just need to get our Australian colleagues to get on board with one of their own.

Ok so this one’s a biggie 🙌 🙌 🙌 ... In response to the growing demand for children's smartphone alternatives from parents across the world, HMD (the people who make Nokia phones) are stepping up to the plate… Today they’re launching The Better Phone Project, an open innovation project to design the ideal child-friendly phone, in collaboration with parents, experts, young people… and us! Parents in the Smartphone Free Childhood community are going to be invited to input into the research and design phases of this vital innovation project. Helping to shape which features go in, which definitely shouldn’t, what this child-friendly phone should look like and more. It's early days but we'll be sharing much more about this collaboration in the coming months and it’s safe to say we’re pretty excited about it – this could be a genuine ‘prayers answered’ moment 🙏 . We might be a teeny bit biased, but in our view The Better Phone Project is exactly what tech innovation should look like; listening, learning and collaborating to build new products that solve real human needs and actually make society better 💡. Huge props to Lars Silberbauer and the all-star team at HMD for making this much needed move and leading the way on one of the defining issues of our time. Signup to get involved in the project is open: https://lnkd.in/dM7DafiY We’re off to file this under ‘fantasy collaboration made real' 🤯 . #smartphonefreechildhood #parentpower #DigitalDetox #MentalHealth #HumanMobileDevices #TheBetterPhoneProject #BetterPhoneProject
