Ok, so we’re making the most of this award (no apologies here!) We had to mark the occasion on home turf! It was an absolute honour to welcome the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, Dr Ruth Smith, and our very own Patron and former High Sheriff, David Kerfoot MBE, to celebrate this achievement with us. Special thanks to Jan Garrill for organising such a meaningful occasion! Having the team together made the moment even more special, and we are grateful for the rousing speeches that inspired us all. This award is a recognition of everyone who has contributed to our mission, especially our 377 one time candidates we have supported into secure employment. Also for those working tirelessly behind the scenes and the team members who have moved on to new challenges. About us
We are a Teesside based charity supporting ex-offenders into paid employment. In 2019 we decided to utilise our combined experiences of prisons and rehabilitation to benefit Teesside and North Yorkshire. Unearthing a vastly underrated talent pool our vision was to create a network of social value driven employers that would give us opportunity when the time was right to advocate our candidates without prejudice into paid employment. Why is our work so important? • Re-offending rates in the UK are at record levels • 56% of adults are reconvicted within one year of release • There are 50% more people in prison than there was 25 years ago • The cost of all this to the UK is approximately £15bn per year • Just 17% of offenders have employment within 12 months of their release Our stats effective of September 2022: 252 referrals; with 191 paid employment opportunities being provided and a further 17 people into further education. As of February 2022, have just a 4% reoffending rate within 12 months engagement with us. When compared to a national average of 56% this shows the importance of providing employment and allowing ex-offenders to participate in and contribute to society. Thank you The Centre for Social Justice ❤️ Last night the national spotlight beamed on Clean Slate Solutions as we became winners of The CSJ Awards 2024 alongside 3 other amazing charities across the UK Our award was presented by Lord Timpson OBE which was a real honour. The room was packed full of business and charity leaders, MPs. philanthropists, policymakers and journalists right in the heart of Westminster. None more important though than one of our success stories Mr M with us for the ride. The award recognised our social impact so far and the innovation shown supporting 370 men and women into secure paid employment since 2019. The most humbling of evenings. Celebrations included a private dinner in the House of Lords and the stunning awards ceremony at One Great George Street. Huge thanks go out to our supporters and beneficiaries, and to the organisers, judges and sponsors. Last Thursday was one of our proudest days yet, as our very own Joe Clarkson was honoured with The High Sheriff Award for his invaluable service to the community we serve. 🏆 Richard Brice, Founder and Head of Operations, shared: “One of our proudest moments so far. Joe has been nothing short of a warrior for good. He’s done so much for Clean Slate Solutions both behind the scenes and on the front line. His commitment to our mission, even when we were running on little to no funding in the early days, never wavered. Joe believed in what we were doing and stayed the course, knowing things would improve, and we thank God that they did. His blend of professionalism, compassion, and sense of justice, along with being an all-round great lad and team player, made us incredibly proud to witness this moment.” A huge thank you to Dr Ruth Smith, The High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, for presenting the award and being such a pleasure to meet. Monday’s 'Leap of Faith' event was truly something special. Hosted by Clean Slate Solutions, Wates Group, and The Recruitment Junction at Teesside University, we had the pleasure of engaging directly with Wates’ supply chain partners, employers who play a vital role in offering sustainable employment opportunities for our candidates in the construction industry. Hearing directly from our candidates about their experiences was incredibly powerful. One of those brave individuals has already been offered work since the event, and we’re confident this is just the beginning. The courage and determination they showed on stage were a true reflection of why second chances matter. Huge thanks to Dan Dodsworth and the Wates Group team for making this happen, as well as HMP Kirklevington for supporting our candidates in attending this crucial event. Great point Joe Clarkson where are they all going ? ZERO joined up approach for those being released early as suspected and ZERO change to the recall process so more Govt headline grabbing red or blue it’s never any different. We will deal with the fallout along with many other in the charitable sector.
Early Release ... You’ve likely seen the recent news surrounding the early release of prisoners in the UK. With around 2,000 people expected to be released tomorrow, I find it hard to swallow that I am only aware of 𝐬𝐢𝐱 individuals being released into Teesside and North Yorkshire, despite the large number of early releases. It’s clear that the HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) are under significant pressure right now, with further pressures going to be strained further upon other services and charities involved in housing, addictions, homelessness and the criminal justice system as a whole in a matter of hours. However, if you get a moment and are working with someone who has a criminal conviction and is looking to employment in the Teesside or North Yorkshire area, please don't hesitate to reach out.
