When Shropshire Wildlife Trust was our chosen charity for our big 20th birthday year back in 2022, we were excited to learn about the plans to bring beavers back to Shrewsbury as part of the Shropshire Beaver Project. It's so fantastic to know the plans have come to fruition and to see these amazing animals brought back to Shrewsbury is wonderful! 🦫 Best of luck to these fluffy friends! 🌟
It’s an exciting day for nature in Shropshire! After years of planning, in partnership with Shrewsbury Town Council, we have brought beavers back to Shrewsbury. Today we released two beavers into the enclosure at Old River Bed Nature Reserve, marking their return after 400 years of absence. The Shropshire Beaver Project is a joint endeavour with Shrewsbury Town Council to assess the impact of these industrious mammals on existing wetland. Beavers are a keystone species and have an important role in restoring and maintaining British wetland ecosystems. They naturally create resilient networks of prime wetland habitat, which in turn produces natural capital benefits such as flood relief and benefit a wide range of species including amphibians, fish and bats. We’ll be closely monitoring their progress and providing updates as they settle in. This will be the best way for us all to enjoy seeing the beavers in all their cuteness, while giving them the peace and quiet to settle in. We know many of you are as excited as we are but for the beavers' welfare, the boardwalk and woodland footpath adjoining the enclosure will be closed for approximately one week after the release. The beavers will need time to settle into their new home, so once this reopens, passers-by are urged to be quiet and considerate, ensuring dogs are on-lead and kept under control.
