In 2015 we installed a ClearWELL #EMF unit to protect a free water knock-out (FWKO) vessel from #calcite and #barite scale deposits. FWKOs are used in the early-stage processing of produced fluids to remove large amounts of water and can be very susceptible to scale. The plant is in Southern Alberta, a region well-known for its water production and scale challenges. ClearWELL’s unit has remained in continuous operation since it was installed around ten years ago, with regular health checks and remote monitoring delivering optimised performance. The operator has reported great efficiency gains, with less downtime required for routine plant turnarounds. This is a direct effect of maintaining a clean vessel and has also delivered savings on chemical operations and reduced the associated HSE risks. Electromagnetic scale control technology which continuously protects wells and equipment without intervention.
About us
ClearWELL provides a long-term, electromagnetic scale control solution for oil and gas and geothermal wells. Our signalling unit is connected to your surface equipment, avoiding the need for well intervention. It can be left in-situ over the life of the well to guard against scale deposition. As well as protecting the system pipelines and tubulars, it also protects downhole equipment such as pumps, valves and screens and also surface processing equipment. The technology uses low energy pulsed radio frequency signals to actively transform the mineral ions in the circulating fluid into non-adhesive micro scale particles. These particles are unable to stick to surfaces and are carried out of the well in suspension. ClearWELL's green technology has been used on many types of wells around the world, delivering impressive performance improvements and significant cost savings by avoiding traditional scale remediation, use of chemicals and production downtime.

Water production with a high level of scale is a common challenge in many #artificiallift wells, but we were the first-choice solution for an operator in Southern Alberta looking to resolve #calcite issues in their #rodpump #well. Scale was depositing on the downhole pump and rods and causing significant runtime reduction and a high rate of early pump failures and replacements. As a result, the repetitive intervention and downtime was costing many days of deferred production. Because the operator is a current ClearWELL client and has already seen the benefits provided by our continuous #scalecontrol technology, they now prefer to select our eco-friendly #EMF option as a frontline solution over chemical treatments. Once we received their call, our site survey, in-house analysis and surface installation quickly provided a tailored solution to mitigate this well’s scale-related issues. We’re now looking forward to remotely monitoring performance and seeing higher relative annual production materialise for this operator. Do you remember our success story of mitigating downhole scale challenges in #Oman? (https://lnkd.in/dtmD8Yym) The case study was subsequently reported in an #SPE conference paper and presented at the 2024 Oman Petroleum Show, with evidence demonstrating our technology’s effective control of #calcite deposition in two PCP wells: https://lnkd.in/debbGfma . We’re delighted to have followed up this operator’s initial trial with the installation of our #electromagnetic #scalecontrol technology on another four additional wells, with two further wells in planning. It’s always a fantastic news story when we can demonstrate evidence and customer conversion through the great results we achieve in the field and the significant value that our continuous #oilfieldscalemanagement delivers to operators. Plus, it’s eco-friendly and requires no intervention! If you’d like to find out more, please contact sales@clearwellenergy.com

We’re pleased to announce further global business expansion, having recently entered the #Brazilian oil and gas market. Supported by our regional representative, our #electromagnetic #scalecontrol technology was applied to an onshore well experiencing extreme #calcite scaling. The well required weekly remediation work but the introduction of our unique surface mounted, continuous scale control technology will combat the high frequency of previous remedial intervention activity. The benefits of this approach are improved site safety and a significant reduction in the volume of deferred production. This will improve overall annual lift cost for the operator, operational efficiency, resource allocation and carbon emissions. A second ClearWELL unit is planned to be installed at an adjacent field and we are actively working on further application of our technology and services in the region. By installing ClearWELL’s innovative and proven #scalecontrol technology on new or recompleted wells ahead of production, our customers are realising huge efficiency savings. When it comes to mineral scaling in the production system, prevention is most definitely better than cure and this approach will save on intervention, remediation, flushing, milling, chemical washes and replacement equipment and avoid the deferred production caused by these multiple well operations each year. Pro-actively preventing scale from taking hold in the tubing and flowlines and strangling production will help you stay one step ahead. We’re always happy to collaborate on long-term arrangements, so you can beat scale and benefit from better #flowassurance over the full life of your wells. These photos show assets operated by one of our long-term clients in #Louisiana, that installs our technology as a matter of course, ahead of first production to prevent #calcite deposition. ClearWELL has completed its first #utilitysector project, installing its #scalecontrol technology to target #halite deposition at a #gasstorage and transmission facility in Western Virginia, USA. Our technology is designed to provide #flowassurance for the subsurface injection, storage and utilisation of natural gas to help this operator bolster national energy security. Halite, a salt-based scale, typically forms in high-temperature and high-pressure gas systems for two reasons. The first is because changes in pressure and temperature cause H2O evaporation from naturally occurring water in the subsurface formation, leaving behind a fluid which is supersaturated with halite and other minerals. Due to the high solubility of halite, it only takes a small change of pressure or temperature to trigger supersaturation and then precipitation. The second reason is because halite is often found in the hydrocarbon fluids of wet gas systems, such as paraffins and asphaltenes, and can precipitate from these fluids in much the same way. This causes significant challenges for operators as it deposits prolifically downhole, blocking flowlines and valves and also affects surface separators, gas compressors, reboilers and other equipment. This new client contacted us after receiving a direct recommendation from an existing customer, which is always great to hear. We’re now collaborating on a technology trial over the next six months to monitor its performance over the peak gas demand period where temperature and pressure fluctuations will be highest. If you’re interested in finding out more about our continuous #electromagnetic #scalemanagement solutions for the global energy industry or have a halite, calcite, barite or other scale issue at your facility, please get in touch with our team on sales@clearwellenergy.com

We recently helped an operator with a large #scalemitigation project at a water injection plant in #Alberta, which supports oil production from a field of over 40 #injectionwells. The water injection surface lines, pumps and filters at the plant were all badly affected by #calcite and #barite scale, requiring frequent cleanout and servicing operations. The scale buildup and remediation work was compromising field-wide injection capacity and lowering the overall production rate so the operator contacted ClearWELL seeking a better solution. The system architecture of each project is different and this case provided several considerations for our engineers as they successfully designed the most efficient transmission of ClearWELL’s electromagnetic signal. Our feasibility study, scale simulations and EMF modelling led to the strategic positioning of just four small units which provide effective #scalecontrol throughout key areas of the plant. The higher cost, risk, logistics and carbon footprint of previous operations have now been eliminated and replaced with our surface-mounted, electrically powered device which delivers effective, long-term, 24/7 #scalemanagement. Performance is monitored remotely, also reducing personnel mobilisation to a minimum. It’s been a busy summer for our #scalecontrol engineers in #Canada, with ongoing equipment health checks and new installations on a variety of wells. In #NorthernAlberta, we recently installed ClearWELL’s #electromagnetic signalling technology on an injection well which had been suffering from #calcite and #barite scaling throughout the tubing. We know this type of scale is common in the region and that our technology is highly effective in controlling its deposition. However, prior to any installation, we always carry out a feasibility study to examine the well and site architecture and perform scale simulations and EMF modelling to inform the configuration, which is particular to each well. Until now the operator had been treating the #downholescale with acid and #scaleinhibitors, with quarterly cleanout operations to maintain injection capacity. The higher cost, risk, logistics and carbon footprint of these operations have now been eliminated with a small surface mounted, electrically powered, signalling device which delivers effective, long-term, 24/7 scale control for this well. Performance is monitored remotely, reducing personnel and equipment mobilisation to a minimum, with scheduled maintenance checks to tie in with other nearby installations, thus reducing this asset’s carbon footprint even further.
