Half a million pounds of improvements have been completed in eight car parks on the Pebblebed Heaths thanks to South East Devon Wildlife. Welcome to our new Head of Forestry and Reserves, Rob Coventry. Rob, who studied forest and nature management in Germany and Denmark before working in various roles across research and policy with the Forestry Commission, is a Chartered Forester. He joins the team from a private consultancy and forest management company. He will take the reins from John Wilding, MBE, who is retiring after 27 years leading the Forestry Team. Chief Executive, John Varley OBE said: “John Wilding has been absolutely central to the smooth running of the Estate over many years. He will be much missed. His dedication and expertise in forestry has helped enormously in meeting our aims of running a financially sustainable operation in a way that cares for the environment and always looks to the future. Exhibition to showcase community’s creative response to Lower Otter Restoration Project 🌟 In 2023, tidal waters were once again allowed to ebb and flow through the lower Otter valley, after being excluded for 200 years by an artificial embankment. The original wetland had been drained for agriculture at the start of the 19th century. The Lower Otter Restoration Project was a joint initiative by Clinton Devon Estates and the Environment Agency. Its aim was to adapt the valley to climate change, restore valuable wildlife-rich wetland habitat, and protect community infrastructure from future flooding. This coastal climate adaptation scheme took over ten years to conceive, develop, and execute and has delivered some of the most significant land use changes seen in East Devon for generations. We are delighted that the University of Exeter is set to showcase some of the community’s cultural and creative responses to this bold conservation project through a new exhibition. The Lower Otter Restoration Project in Translation exhibition will be held at The Forum on the University’s Streatham campus, from 18–22 November. 🌿 A communal vision for Heaths to Sea landscape recovery in the lower Otter Valley 🌊 On Tuesday 15th October, Heaths to Sea project team held an initial Stakeholder Engagement Workshop to feed local community views into the broad vision for landscape recovery across the lower Otter Valley. The workshop was facilitated by neutral 3rd party facilitators – Dialogue Matters. A balanced and inclusive range of participants were invited to be the voice for their community, land use type, livelihood or interest. The workshop was an opportunity for participants to share their initial hopes and ideas, build a vision for landscape recovery that benefits all, and discuss how stakeholders could be involved. From this a range of events and communications will be developed, to take place from December 2024 to April 2025, to ensure everyone can have a say.
