We’re delighted our partnership with Save the Children Scotland has secured funding from The Robertson Trust to deliver research on young mothers’ employment. Our work will help identify and address the causes of young mothers’ in-work poverty. https://buff.ly/3ZWfJWf Despite experiencing high levels of in-work poverty, young mothers are routinely invisible in policy responses, and in employer efforts to improve job quality and fair work. Better understanding of how the current system traps young mothers in in-work poverty is the critical first step. Approaches to systems change must be evidenced & our research will generate recommendations for policymakers and employers. We’ll also deliver a campaign that will empower young mothers with information on their rights to mitigate the disenfranchisement that the current system sustains. Women’s poverty is indivisible from children’s poverty, so our work will help to reduce the trauma and harm that is caused by growing up in poverty. We’re excited to get started and create change for young mothers and their families.

According to Close the Gap at the time of writing in 2022: 80% of women who were harassed at work did NOT report it to their employer Reasons ranged from: - feeling they won't be believed - that nothing will change - worried they will be blamed or ostracised 90% of the perpetrators were male (including where it was a man who reported being sexually harassed). Sexualised comments were dismissed as 'just banter' or the victims assured 'it wasn't meant that way'. Power imbalance is also a common theme. The ONLY way to stop sexual harassment in the work place is to make it a safe place for reporting. For reports to be investigated, taken seriously and for victim blaming, shaming and minimising to stop. For perpetrators to be punished, not protected. I know I am one of the lucky few. When I reported sexual misconduct in the workplace in the past, my concerns were taken seriously, I was supported and the perpetrator fired. The news reports have shown me how much I have taken that for granted, to hear the hundreds of stories coming out following on from the #gregwallace scandal and today the #pinknews allegations. In the USA they called it the 'Harvey Effect' - people now coming forward, wanting change and feeling they might be believed. Employers- it's time to take this seriously. Get your staff trained on what is classed as sexual harassment, do your risk assessments, publish your policies and commit to a standard of behaviour for a safe workplace. You can be a part of the story where a difference was made.

Did you know that 70% of women in Scotland have experienced or witnessed workplace sexual harassment, yet 80% don't report it to their employer? 🔗 The link between violence against women (VAW), gender inequality and women’s labour market inequality is not widely acknowledged. ✍️ In our latest #16DaysofActivism blog, we discuss the impact of VAW on women's employment and highlight the importance of tackling gender inequality at work to prevent VAW. Our #EquallySafeAtWork employer accredited programme plays a vital role in this effort. 📖 Read more here: https://buff.ly/3Vu92YM
