We recently attended Cardiff Commitment’s first ever construction industry and careers event at North Ely Youth Centre to talk to young people about their career prospects and interests. The event, which is in partnership with Cardiff Youth Services, was a great success and gave young people the opportunity to participate in engaging and educational activities that highlight what the construction industry is all about. We’re looking forward to attending more of their careers events in the future!

The CMB team have made good progress on the KLA UK R&D and Manufacturing site in Newport over the last 10 weeks. Since our last project update, both the Manufacturing Hall and R&D cleanroom have advanced well, with the final fix and finishes nearing completion in preparation for environmental and stability testing. The compressed air plant is now in position and undergoing final connection, the Wet Systems have been flushed, dosed and balanced, and the boilers and chillers are now commissioned and operational. We have also commenced the Fit-Out of the first-floor expansion space with the partition wall umbrella details and stud walls well underway. Externally, the new plant room ground works are due to commence in earnest. We’re looking forward to providing another update on this exciting development in the new year! #semiconductors #cleanroom #mechanicalengineering #electricalengineering #manufacturing

Our apprentices and apprenticeship program have been a key aspect of our business since day one and remains a top priority for us at CMB. We therefore decided as of this year to set up the Roberto Dattero Apprentice Of The Year Award. Rob sadly passed away in April of this year and was one of CMB’s longest serving employees, who was well known and respected among office and site staff. He dedicated a huge amount of his time and energy to this company – and more specifically, as CMB Labour Manager, our apprentices – who he worked with week in and week out. On this note, on what would have yesterday been Rob’s 64th birthday, we would like to announce and congratulate Jack Roberts as the first ever winner of the inaugural Roberto Dattero CMB Apprentice Of The Year Award for 2023/24. Jack is a 4th Year apprentice for CMB who joined us in 2021 and has showcased his value and progression during this time. CMB prides itself on its continued dedication to nurture and bring through the next generation of talent into the industry and Jacks excellent attitude is a testament to this. Jack commented on the award win, saying: “It’s an honour to be the first name on the Roberto Dattero Award. I hope it’s the first of many awards with CMB, as I continue with the progression I’m making.” Jason Oliver, Labour Supervisor, added: “Well done, Jack, on earning the Apprentice Of The Year Award in honour of Roberto Dattero – a remarkable achievement that reflects both your commitment and the lasting impact of his legacy.” Pictured below presenting Jack with the award is Rob Borley (Project Director), Marcello Dattero (Training Coordinator and Rob’s brother), Jason Oliver (Labour Supervisor), and Neil Thomson (Operations Manager). Marcello, who has served a remarkable 25 years’ service to CMB (the same as Rob), shared the following on the news of the annual award in memory of his brother: “As CMB grew and apprentices were taken on, Rob became the Labour Supervisor and was very supportive of the train and retain initiative. He realised that there was a need to expand the skill level of those learning the trade, so he worked hard to establish a training scheme within CMB. I was amazed at the fact that he knew the names and backgrounds of every apprentice. He always encouraged and disciplined in equal measures to ensure they became good, if not great, trades personnel. Gender did not bother Rob – ability did. I was very moved that I was asked to present the first ever Roberto Dattero Apprentice Of The Year Award to Jack Roberts and I am certain he would have been overjoyed in how he will be remembered. A true one off.” CMB Project Director, Rob Borley, added: “We hope this award will grow and become a benchmark for excellence over the coming years, recognising the importance of apprentices for the future of our business and the industry.” Congratulations again, Jack on winning this award and we wish you the best of luck with your career progression at CMB 👏

We are pleased to announce that CMB Engineering’s parent company, Borley Engineering Services Limited (BESL), have been appointed by Cardiff Council as the emergency interim Principal Contractor for the Fairwater Campus project. This announcement follows a previous period of uncertainty surrounding the project for subcontractors and small businesses alike, and we are excited to once again commence work on this development. With BESL being appointed interim Principal Contractor, it will allow for work on site to restart as quickly as possible, and for supply chain partners to have the job security that they deserve, as well as to be paid as promptly as possible for their time and work completed prior to the sad demise of the previous Principal Contractor, ISG. The project is Cardiff’s largest education development and includes the construction of three new-build schools, namely Cantonian High School, Riverbank School and Woodlands High School, all situated on the single site in Fairwater. The CMB/BESL team not only have a wide range of experience in developing schools across the UK, but have also spent the previous 12 months working on the Fairwater Campus, building relationships with the supply chain partners, onsite staff and Cardiff Council, and are confident that fulfilling our interim duty on this project will be nothing shy of a success. A spokesperson for Cardiff Council commented on our appointment on this project, saying: “By selecting BESL as the interim emergency Principal Contractor, we will get workers back on site as soon as possible, ensure workers are paid for work done, minimise delays, keep costs down, protect jobs, and safeguard the supply chain while protecting the public investment that has already taken place in what is one of the UK’s largest education projects.”

Following last week’s announcement of our sponsorship of the Cuxton Under 7’s Girls Team, we recently had the pleasure of sponsoring two players from the Briton Ferry Llansawel Ladies Football team, as they head into the 2024/2025 season. Attacking Midfielder, Megan Kearle, and Right Winger, Ella Smitham, have started off the season on a fantastic foot with Megan being awarded player of the match in their 4-1 win this weekend and Ella having scored in the game prior to that. We’d like to wish Emma and Megan all the best as they progress further in the season and look forward to hearing more from the team on their successes. #csr #givingback #grassroots #hergametoo

At CMB, we take great pride in our continued efforts to support the sporting community, and over recent years have increased our sponsorships within Women’s football. We now currently sponsor several women’s teams including the Cardiff City Football Club Under 19’s, Llanrumney United's newly-established first ever women’s team and as of recently, the Cuxton 91 Lionesses Under 7’s Girls Team. This recent sponsorship proudly comes from our CMB Blackpool division as part of the Waltham Forest development we have been working on and will continue into the upcoming season as the Cuxton 91 Lionesses work to compete in the Kent Girls/Ladies Under 8’s League. We wish the team the very best of luck for this season! Willmott Dixon #csr #socialresponsibility #givingback #grassroots

Borehamwood’s BBC Elstree Centre is a TV production facility based just outside of Watford and after CMB secured the £3.9 Million M&E contract earlier this year to work under Principal Contractor Mitie, we commenced works in May 2024. The facility was initially built as a film studio in 1914 and was converted to a TV studio in 1960, where it has since been the home to filming for the likes of EastEnders, Holby City, BBC Children in Need, Comic Relief and more. The original 16-acre campus comprises of seven stages, a workshop, offices, and postproduction facilities. The BBC are now upgrading some of these facilities to provide additional office space, editing and dubbing suites and a variation of other areas for the production of their television series and more. The building is designed to have an industrial look from within by having many of the M&E services on show. We are currently carrying out the M&E works to an existing scenery block in the middle of the site – some of these include installing a new centralised ventilation system, new air conditioning VRV system, upgrading the electrical incoming supplies and providing a coordinated installation that suits the needs of the users. Our team have also recently begun works on the plantroom and external plant area as part of Phase 1, as well as the reception and lobby area, the main entrance, the installation of sound proofed editing and dubbing suites, dressing rooms, first floor suites and executive staff offices. There are also follow up works that we have been contracted to deliver on another phase of this project that we look forward to sharing progress works on in the coming months. We were recently the proud headline sponsor of the Willmott Dixon South Downs Challenge, undertaken by a number of their Construction South Office staff. We supported this fantastic initiative with a £5,000 sponsorship which will go towards Building For The Future – a parent-led charitable organisation which works to provide activities, support and therapy to children with disabilities and their families in Wokingham. A huge congratulation goes to the Willmott Dixon team who undertook the physical challenge along the South Downs where groups of staff members covered up to 40 miles of walking and up to 90 miles of mountain Biking and road Cycling – and by doing so have helped raise an unbelievable total of £34,000 👏 It’s always a pleasure giving back to the communities we work within and hope that the total raised can go a long way in helping the families who work with Building For The Future. #charity #givingback #csr #wokingham

As Spelthorne Leisure Centre in Staines-upon-Thames in Surrey has achieved practical completion, this state-of-the-art centre, where CMB have provided the mechanical services over the last 2 years, has remarkably secured itself the title as the largest Passivhaus leisure centre in the world. Passivhaus refers to a performance-based set of design criteria for very low energy buildings and is used for energy saving purposes. The Spelthorne centre has been designed to consume up to 60% less energy compared with a standard new building. Additional benefits of Passivhaus certification include optimal building performance, sustainable building, excellent air quality, superior ventilation and substantially lower energy costs. Cllr Joanne Sexton, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, commented on the news saying: “We are delighted to be in a pioneering authority, demonstrating our commitment to net zero by building an ultra-low Passivhaus leisure centre. Having declared a climate emergency, we recognise the need to lead by example to achieve cleaner and greener lifestyles and a sustainable borough for all to enjoy.” CMB are excited to have played a crucial role in this historic project and witness one of the world’s most advanced, energy efficient Passivhaus leisure centres in action. We will be providing a full handover case study on this development in the near future. Spelthorne Borough Council #passivhaus #sustainability #ecofriendly #spelthorne
