Systems Software Experts. Open Source. Independent, Ethical, Effective. Leading in Enterprise, Devices and Automotive
About us
Codethink specialises in system-level software infrastructure to support advanced technical applications, working across a range of industries including finance, automotive, telecoms, agriculture and heavy machinery. Typically we get involved in software architecture, design, development, integration, debugging and improvement on the deep scary plumbing code that makes most folks run away screaming. We aim to be great at software design and development, and to improve the practice of software engineering as a real engineering discipline. We have learned that we can only achieve this by sharing what we know, and absorbing what others can teach us.

'RISC V Linux bug hunting' by Ben Dooks, FOSDEM 2025 Watch this talk to discover: - Advanced debugging techniques - How to decipher crashes and dump object code without attaching a debugger - Real cases of bugs found in RISC-V systems and how they're fixed 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: https://lnkd.in/ebDAv2-c 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Debugging issues with the Linux kernel and user space can be both interesting and challenging. This talk looks at some bugs we found while working with RISC-V in both kernel and user space. The aim is to show multiple ways of approaching kernel and user space issues, a runthrough of why these happen, and how we fixed these problems. We will include taking an syzbot report and analysing what is going on during a strange kernel OOPS, and going through a user report of a crashing system where there was an issue with a Buildbot on a set of remote workers. As part of this, we will go into how to decode kernel OOPs, dump object code, and attempt to decipher bug reports without attaching a debugger. #riscv #linux #linuxkernel #fosdem #fosdem2025

Open source software is everywhere, powering everything from aerospace engineering to the smartphone in your pocket. Despite this, misconceptions persist. Writing for Forbes Technology Council, Codethink's John Ellis tackles these misconceptions head-on, addressing the belief that proprietary code is of higher quality and clarifying the complexities surrounding open source licensing. Did you catch Gavin McCall at 'Safety Critical Systems Symposium (SSS'25)' in York this week? On Thursday, Gavin gave a lunchtime talk on the Trustable Software Framework (TSF), covering its importance in improving the quality of modern functional safety. If you missed Gavin's talk, you can learn more about the TSF on our website: https://lnkd.in/eKqwx6YU Thank you to everyone who attended the drinks reception on Wednesday evening. #functionalsafety #criticalsystems #safetycriticalsystems

Thank you for the kind words, Jonathan Moore! #trustablesoftware #FOSDEM #FOSDEM2025
This is by far the most complete and succinct summary of why trust in software is even more important than safety and the weaknesses of the current and ancient approaches to safe software. Not only that but presented by an actual expert in the development and maintenance of software that requires high integrity software - in many cases with orders of magnitude more potential for harm than will ever present in automotive. Thank you Paul Sherwood and Codethink https://lnkd.in/erzSHh-c P.S. easily listenable at 1.5 times so only 16 minutes of your life! P.P.S. Here's everything wrong with the requirements model that underpins all ISO standards. https://lnkd.in/e9xZgBFy
