Our Assessment and Admissions Manager, Michael Ibbotson, is at the Civic Centre in Mansfield today, 10:00am-2:00pm for the Nottinghamshire County Council Preparing for Adulthood event. Friends tackle ultramarathon to raise more than £4,500 for specialist college Two friends rose to the challenge of a 50-kilometre ultramarathon and raised £4,542 for a specialist college that educates and cares for students with communication needs. Alex Jamison and Bastiaan Buijtenhuijs raised more than £2,000 which was then matched by Alex’s employer, construction group Hensall Group, thanks to support from the company’s CEO, Chris Bond . Tessa Padden-Duncan delivered linguistics training to our college and school staff giving them an opportunity to refresh their BSL skills and gain a better understanding of BSL linguistics. This helps our staff work better with our d/Deaf students in their vocational areas supporting seamless communication in lessons to d/Deaf students. We thoroughly enjoyed learning the theory behind BSL linguistics for example: why linguistics is so important in our work, Language Acquisition and where it was proven, semantics, sign nouns and sign verbs to enable us to develop our confidence and absorb information that benefits us all. Yesterday we had a wonderful and emotional evening announcing the official name of our Deaf provision, the 'Deaf Education Centre' 🙂🎉 Our Deaf students have been enjoying their new base within the college, led by BSL Manager, Natalie Pollard, and her new team which includes a Deaf Centre Coordinator and six Communication Support Workers, all focused and committed to ensuring our d/Deaf students educational and communication methods are met. The students have already fed back their views about the new provision. They feel more confident and supported within their sessions with their dedicated CSW's. We look forward to watching this Centre expand and welcoming more d/Deaf students into our college, community and beyond. A very big thank you to our Acting Deputy Principal, Lisa Pyott, for making an amazing cake! It was truly delicious!
