We enjoyed watching these inspiring new #postgraduate researcher videos, developed by our University of Bristol colleagues and funded by Research England. The alumni series highlights how researchers value their #PhD experience, build transferable skills, and sometimes follow varied and unexpected career paths. For potential future students, the applicant series provides candid tips from current researchers, based on their experiences of applying for a PhD. 📢 ICMS Modelling Camp 2025 📢 We are hosting our annual modelling camp from 28 April - 2 May in Edinburgh. This event is designed for PhD students and takes a similar format to a study group, with several real-world challenges being tackled in groups over the course of the workshop. Modelling camps provide excellent skills training for early career researchers and provide the opportunity to apply different branches of the mathematical sciences to a practical setting. Take a look at some feedback from previous participants: ▪ “It was good that I could experience different areas in maths apart from my research area." ▪ "It was a good experience to build connection with the industrial partners.” ▪ “I was lucky to be in a great group where we could achieve great things over the week, so it exceeded my expectations.” Places are limited so register your interest now! https://lnkd.in/eUjiVg7g ❗ Deadline: 19 Feb

📊 Had an amazing time at PhD Connect 2024 in Leeds last week, and many thanks to The Alan Turing Institute for organising the event. This was a great opportunity to connect with other PhD students studying data science and AI sectors similar to my own, as well as a great chance to discuss these topics both in focus groups and on stage. 🎤 I especially enjoyed the talk by Piotr Mirowski from Google DeepMind about public engagement with AI, as well as the opportunity to practice my public speaking in front of my largest crowd ever!

Our annual Compass Conference took place last month, providing our PhD students, alumni, #industry partners and #research colleagues with an opportunity to explore 'The Future of Data Science'. The presentations, posters and discussions covered various topics, including machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Our talented students highlighted their research, and delivered talks with themes ranging from neural networks and Large Language Models (LLMs), to making music with #mathematics. Special thanks to our keynote speaker Aline Villavicencio for her fascinating insights - and to Compass alumni Dominic Owens, Jake Spiteri and Michael Whitehouse, for sharing details of their recent professional journeys. We are already looking forward to next year! For now, you can read a student perspective of the event on the Compass blog: https://bit.ly/CompCon24 Nick Whiteley Daniel Lawson Helen Mawdsley University of Bristol EPSRC #datascience #computationalstatistics #artificialintelligence #AI #maths

New Student Perspectives blog post by Compass CDT student Xinrui Shi: This article addresses the question of how to optimally allocate a fixed number of participants across trials in a pairwise meta-analysis, to achieve the most precise estimates, considering the trade-off between the precision of individual observations and their quantity.
