Releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name.
About us
Founded in 1952, Compassion is a Christian child development charity releasing children from poverty, in Jesus’ name. Working in 29 countries, we partner with more than 8,500 local churches within communities experiencing poverty. Our heart is to give children and young people the opportunity to thrive and reach their God-given potential both now and into the future. We’re Christ-centred, motivated by Jesus’ call to love our neighbour. We're child-focused, helping those left most vulnerable to the effects of poverty. And we’re church-driven, running our programmes exclusively in partnership with local churches. Compassion’s child development programmes are holistic, giving children support in every core area of their lives. Because we work in partnership with local churches who know their communities inside out, our programmes are tailored to a child’s age, gender, health, culture and family situation. Independent research shows they are highly effective, and now more than 2.3 million children globally are being released from poverty. Happy Universal Children's Day! 🎉 One hundred years ago, leaders from more than 50 countries gathered in Geneva, Switzerland. Their purpose: to protect the next generation after the horrors of the First World War. One woman, Eglantyne Jebb, realised that all children needed special protection and together with a group of specialists, Eglantyne wrote a set of principles to support children who had lived through the war. These principles became the Geneva Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The declaration begins by saying, “Humanity owes to the child the best it has to give”. In 1989, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child defined these rights. Countries that ratify the convention enter a legally binding international agreement, which sets out the rights of a child regardless of race, nationality or abilities. Today, 196 countries have ratified the convention. Today is an important day for Compassion: a chance to reflect on the crucial, life-giving rights that belong to all children, and to renew our commitment to fulfil them in Jesus’ name. Read our blog to unpack 11 rights of the child that Compassion projects around the world are able to fulfil each week https://bit.ly/4fRL1CD

It's World Toilet Day! 🚽 Did you know that over 1.5 billion* of the world's population do not have access to basic sanitation, such as toilets and latrines? A lack of clean toilets can lead to disease and illnesses, and many girls often miss school when menstruating due to a lack of toilet facilities. Your support can help bless a whole community with hygienic toilets, igniting hope for many families. This practical gift brings health and dignity to children and their wider community. Today marks the beginning of COP29, the largest climate change conference worldwide. 🌳 This week will bring together world leaders to address critical climate challenges, especially in vulnerable regions. 🤝 Did you know that climate change disproportionally impacts people living in poverty? Children are more physically and psychologically vulnerable than adults to the effects of climate change, biodiversity loss, and increasing levels of pollution in the air, soil, water and oceans. At a Compassion project in Kenya, Lilian and her daughter Merrium (who is registered at the project) had tried for years to venture into commercial vegetable farming, but the unpredictable weather patterns and persistent drought made it an impossible undertaking. ⛪ Everything changed when Compassion's local church partner was able to build a sand dam for the benefit of the entire community.
