Competence is not a destination – it is a journey of continuous learning and adaptation. In the most recent SELECT - Trade Association for Electrical Contracting Industry Scotland Cabletalk magazine, Huw Bement, Managing Director at CompEx, highlights the critical importance of developing and maintaining competency in industries where safety is paramount. In an evolving world, relying solely on experience is not enough. The Dunning-Kruger effect can lead to believing in overestimated abilities, creating a false sense of security. This, coupled with complacency at the “unconscious competence” stage, can result in mistakes with serious consequences, specifically when operating in hazardous environments. In today’s workplace, where technological advancements and evolving standards are constant, both individuals and organisations must remain adaptable. Competency isn’t a one-time achievement – it requires regular practice, reflection and up-to-date training. Employers must invest in modern resources, while individuals need to take ownership of their ongoing development. Following a request from the last Hazardous Area working group, Darren Crannis MEng (Hons) DIS MIET, Technical Manager at the ECA - Excellence in Electrotechnical and Engineering Services, has published some high-level guidance exclusively for members who encounter hazardous areas for the first time. The ECA outlines key information on the definition of a hazardous area, who can work within them and the insurance requirements that need to be met. The document also highlights the importance of training, competency and accreditation when operating in potentially explosive atmospheres. We are pleased that the ECA has highlighted and signposted its members to CompEx training and certification to validate competency for personnel operating in hazardous areas globally.
