About us
The Compost Certification Scheme (CCS) provides assurance to consumers, farmers, food producers, and retailers that quality compost produced from composting processes is safe for human, animal and plant health. The CCS is the only independent scheme in the UK aligned and providing a framework for independent assessment and certification of compost to ‘PAS 100 only' and to PAS 100 and the Compost Quality Protocol. The Scheme is run by Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Renewable Energy Association (REA).

📣 Tender Opportunity: Risk Assessments for Compost and AD EoW Frameworks The Research Hub is seeking an experienced and qualified contractor to undertake a project entitled “Risk assessments to inform the revision of End-of-Waste Frameworks for compost and digestate.” The project aims to inform the development of evidence-based End-of-Waste positions for compost and digestate (i.e., the Compost Resource Framework and AD Resource Framework, respectively). This work will involve: 🔎 Gap Analysis: Identify potential hazards within the compost and digestate value chains. ✔ Risk Assessment: Evaluate risks associated with the production and use of waste-derived compost and digestates For full project details and submission instructions, refer to the Tender Invitation Document (TID) linked below. Questions? Contact Megan at megan@realschemes.org.uk by Friday 8th November 2024. Submission Deadline: Friday 6th December 2024. https://lnkd.in/egj_i2wQ

Our Policy Manager Duncan Craig attended the Simpler Recycling 🍌Food Legislation Breakfast Meeting during #CEWEEK2024. This meeting, hosted by First Mile | Certified B Corp and Fitzrovia Partnership, focused on the new Simpler Recycling legislation and how businesses can prepare for the separated recycling requirements. Topics included: ✅ What is the new Simpler Recycling legislation? ✅ Why Simpler Recycling is a good thing ✅ How to get compliant Reforms are expected in March 2025 for businesses and March 2026 for households. Businesses are urged to prepare for the reforms and recognise the importance of food waste collection. Not only does it save the environment, but it also saves you money! Duncan was pleased that more London authorities and waste managers value sending food waste to Anaerobic Digestion. One simple way for households to contribute to the circular economy is by disposing their food waste in the appropriate food waste bin 🗑️ and taking care not to put other materials (glass, plastic, etc.) in the food waste bin. This ‘source-segregated food waste’ is collected and transported to composting or AD facilities where it is ‘recycled’ to produce compost and digestate which may be spread to land. Composts may also be blended with other materials for use as a growing media in horticulture 🌱 Composts and digestates produced by sites certified under @Compost Certification Scheme or @Biofertiliser Certification Scheme undergo rigorous testing required by the relevant PAS standards. These materials are expected to be of excellent quality and meet end-of-waste criteria, meaning they can be legally distributed and used as a product, helping to effectively close the cycle of resource use (talk about circular thinking!) #CEWeek24

Organic materials, primarily the crops used to grow our food🥑, are a key constituent of global resource use. Therefore, managing the end-of-life phase of organic materials is critical to the success of the wider #circulareconomy. BCS & CCS are committed to promoting the circular economy by certifying the recycling of #organicwaste through industrial-scale #composting and #anaerobicdigestion to create nutrient-rich #organic materials to support sustainable UK agriculture and horticulture. Proper treatment and recycling prevent organic waste from going to landfill where it creates greater GHGs and its value is not reclaimed to grow new 🥕crops. #CEWeek2024

CCS and BCS are pleased to participate in #CEWeek2024 in our role supporting the circular economy for organic materials in the UK. This week of events, hosted by ReLondon celebrates the many ways individuals and organisations are working toward a circular economy to reduce the harmful impacts of resource over-consumption. The theme is: “Join the stuff revolution. Combating the climate emergency with the circular economy.” We’ll be attending two in-person events: 🥕 Transforming Food Waste into flavour (1st Oct) will be attended by Schemes Manager Oliver Dunn and Research Hub Manager Megan Muller-Girard ♻ ‘Simpler Recycling’ legislation breakfast meeting (3rd Oct) will be attended by Policy Manager Duncan Craig If you happen to be attending either of these events, please don’t hesitate to say hello!
