Between 7 and 11 June 2017, fires tore through the Cape south coast area around Knysna. The devastating wildfire is considered the worst in the country's history. The Knysna municipality had already implemented the ComUnity rapid digitalization platform for supporting its citizen programs and quickly added a disaster management program. From idea to impact took a matter of hours. The ability to get started quickly allowed the municipality to update its disaster information and respond speedily and appropriately.   Using the ComUnity platform enabled Knysna municipality to operate an integrated and multi-disciplinary disaster management capability in a much shorter time than would have been possible otherwise. With a disaster management system up and running quickly, the municipality could implement a rapid response function, and have the means to mitigate the severity of the disaster.
