𝐂𝐨-𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐦 𝐰/ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 🙏 Let’s bring our awareness to this: we are human beings living together on this planet, which we call home. And yet the planet is in crisis... I am sure we can all agree that many of the current systems and paradigms in which we operate are becoming increasingly dysfunctional. But instead of focusing on these, I want to 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐦 that fills me with hope and excitement, as I see how it is helping humanity heal, harmonize, and transition to a reality where we not only are trying to survive, but we can actually 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞. ✨ This new earth paradigm is based on 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞, 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 and a 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠. I see it growing in pockets all over the world. As a digital nomad, I have lived in many places and I consistently find conscious communities embracing and living by these values almost everywhere I go. To me, 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 of the 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐦. 🌱 🌎 What exactly do we mean by New Earth, conscious, and conscious communities? I will be sharing more soon. But for now ... 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 refers to being fully aware, present, and mindful of one’s thoughts, actions, and surroundings. It implies being deeply aware of the interconnectedness of everything, often referred to as "𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠" (a term popularized by zen master Thich Nhat Hanh). To be conscious in this sense is to understand that our wellbeing is tied to the wellbeing of others and the planet. A conscious community, thus, is one that is rooted in this awareness. It goes beyond simply sharing space and resources, to creating a community where its members actively participate in 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥, 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠. 🪷 🤝  💚 Based on my experience and research, these are also the communities that are 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 in the long-run. Does this post resonate for you? Let me know in the comments! May we support the new earth paradigm to 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐦- for ourselves, for each other, for the planet. 🌸 🙌 PS- If you are a 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫/𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫/𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫/𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐩𝐬/𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 and see or want your community to be a seed of the New Earth paradigm, reach out to me. As part of one of the projects I have co-founded, Conscious Coliving, we have a 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 for committed shared living operators who are ready to make their 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞.  #consciouscoliving #cocreating #newearth #interbeing #wellbeing #consciouscommunities

  • Last week Knight Frank released their 2024 Co-Living Report focusing on the performance and opportunities of the UK shared living sector. Some highlights of the report include: 🛌 Last year, nearly 2,500 new co-living beds completed and opened to residents, reflecting a 65% increase on coliving delivery in 2022. 🔢 This brought the total number of operational coliving homes in the UK to 7,540. 🏗 A further 13,483 coliving units are currently under construction or have planning permission granted.  📢 Residential property review site HomeViews has reported high levels of satisfaction among coliving residents – 92% of residents said they would recommend their landlord to friends and family. 💰 Since 2020, investors have spent £902 million acquiring or funding coliving developments. That includes a record £258 million in the first quarter of 2024, with coliving spend accounting for a fifth of the total invested in the UK Build to Rent market in the first quarter of 2024. Overall this is a positive sign for the UK coliving market in terms of investor appetite and pipeline opportunities. With supply significantly lower than housing demand across the UK, the opportunities for market growth are strong. You can download the report in the comments below to dive in further. Great work from Lizzie Breckner, Oliver Knight and their teams on the research! #coliving #data #research #pipeline #development #realestate

  • Last week marked the completion of the first round of our signature Coliving Community Program! 🎉 The program is a co-learning and co-creation journey into what makes a thriving shared living community and business. Over the 6-month program we exchanged and learned from one another on how to enhance the user and community experience, drive impact through local neighborhoods and ecosystems, strengthen team dynamics and business growth and much more. 🤓 We’re very grateful for our first cohort of shared living pioneers: Fuzer / Amvest, Udda, City Pop, HomeRoom (YC W22), samesame co-living, Outpost Club, Hyve and COLIVE. One of the main benefits of the program is the community of professionals it helps foster, and these innovators really embodied the ethos of the program by remaining open and honest when sharing about their challenges, solutions, inspirations and visions of success with one another. 👏 As co-facilitators of the program, this is the value we got out of the program too – learning and being inspired by a group of coliving pioneers aiming to foster more conscious and impact-driven shared living communities. If you’re looking for strategies to help enable residents to feel engaged, connected, happy, healthy, and loyal to your shared living brand, give us a shout to be involved in the next cohort! 📢 We’ll be starting this fall and you can reach out the prorgram co-lead Naima von Ritter Figueres to explore joining. #coliving #community #facilitation #operations #impact #teams

  • Our co-founder Dr Penny Clark was recently interviewed for this BBC article, 'Why Communal Living Can Make Us Happier'. The article looks at living in communal warehouses, #cohousing, and touches upon many other "cos", including #coliving, #communes and #cooperatives. This article is a good reminder that there are many ways to live together communally. And of course, there are always things that different shared living models can learn from one another. We're happy to see discussion of communal living reach a mainstream media platform. Thanks to journalist Matilda Welin for exploring what we think 😉 is such an important and increasingly relevant topic. You can have a read of the full article here -> https://lnkd.in/e95q_uEy

After a nice cold plunge in the coast of Brittany, this weekend I read an article from The Guardian that surveyed hundreds of leading climate experts and they found that: “77% of respondents believe global temperatures will reach at least 2.5C above preindustrial levels, a devastating degree of heating.” When I read these kinds of stats it’s really tough: the eco-anxiety can definitely kick in sometimes. 😵💫 My question is always how can we go from climate despair to climate optimism? So as a professional in the shared living industry I wanted to share 7 of my favorite sustainability practices and case studies from the real estate sector as an inspiration for what is possible: 🌀 Circular and regenerative design: check out the 'Doughnut for urban development' from Home.Earth for an open-source guide on inclusive, regenerative and circular design methods. 🌾 Biobased construction materials: the use of clay, hemp, straw, timber, rammed earth and other natural materials for insulation, roofs, plasters, FF&E and more. See BC architects & studies, Biobased Creations and Material Cultures for practical resources and case studies.  🐝 Biodiversity net gain (BNG): essentially adding more biodiversity to a site than what was left before. The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and Greengage Environmental Ltd have useful guides on how to implement BNG during planning and development phases. ⚙️ Tech integrations that measure resident energy consumption: Utopi does this really well in the UK BTR sector with operators like Moda, and other platforms like Spaceflow and Spike have similar features. 👉 Nudging sustainable behaviors: shared living operators have so much opportunity to encourage sustainable behaviors within their communities. Check out the PhD research from my colleague Dr Penny Clark on ‘pro-environmental practices’ in shared living. 📊 Certification and measurement: using certifications and/or developing your own measuring and reporting systems to measure what you treasure! Architects like Wellstudio - Architecture & Coliving can support you on achieving WELL certifications, investors like Bridges Fund Management Ltd. require sustainable reporting from their development partners like HUB and operators like Urban Campus are using Passivhaus for one of their new buildings. 😌 Stubborn optimism: in order to remain hopeful and go from climate despair to action, we need what climate activists Christiana Figueres and Tom Rivett-Carnac call ‘stubborn optimism’. Check out their podcast Outrage + Optimism to get inspired and hopeful. There is so much being done and to be done and so much opportunity (and challenges) ahead of us … and protecting our natural systems can be a lever for positive impact in many other realms. Send me a DM if you want to learn more about any of the references above. Would you add any other inspirations? Rooting for us all! 🙌🏼 #climatechange #sustainability #solutions #realestate #sharedliving #communities

  • It was a great turnout earlier this week for Bisnow's UK #Coliving Summit. Our Co-Founder Dr Penny Clark attended, and below are her panel takeaways... 📈 There is increased investor interest and confidence due to working proof(s) of concept, plus the revised LSPBSH / Coliving Policy. However, planners could go further in acknowledging coliving. Some authorities have placed quite onerous conditions on developers - more can be done to make the case for coliving, how it fulfils housing need, and its potential #ESG benefits. 🤩 How to communicate the quality of experience and amenity over SQM? An interesting question from the audience Robert Shaw. Coliving upends housing dogma about what makes a good home (size, privacy, ownership). Communicating its value requires new measures of what good looks like - a question in some ways echoed by Gravity Co’s Founder & CIO Susanna Rock when she asked Utopi CTO Falk Bleyl how they measure the “S” in ESG. 📊 There is a need for more data on coliving, its residents, and the use of spaces. While data is starting to emerge, we are still somewhat reliant on sister typologies (i.e. BTR and #PBSA). Given that coliving is inhabited by the ‘next gen tenant’, which Damien Sharkey shared is ever-more socially and environmentally conscious, more comprehensive and coherent data will do much to define and improve best practice. 🧑🤝🧑 Community experience must be adequately valued. In a fragmented market what will make coliving stand out is the community experience, and how the operator shapes that, said Susanna Rock. We couldn't agree more! 🏢 Coliving a subset of #BTR? Over the past few years ‘But what IS coliving??’ is a question which continually resurfaces (and there isn’t full agreement yet). But the panelists consistently labeled coliving as a subset of #BTR, which financially aligns, as it was shared that coliving has a similar ROI, especially as operating models become more efficient. Thanks to Bisnow and the panelists Arnaud Malbos, David Jerrard, Susanna Rock, Falk Bleyl, Sam Nichols Ilya Tabachinskiy Helena Tsiantes Jansson, Damien Sharkey, Ali Reza Ravanshad, Jeremy Pickard, Andy Billingham, Judy Fawcett for their insights!
