Conservation Optimism supports conservationists around the globe by sharing hope and building capacity and community.
About us
Conservation Optimism supports, empowers and enables conservationists around the globe, professional and amateur, by sharing hope and building capacity and community. We believe that a healthy, (bio)diverse and resilient world is achievable. We understand that the challenge of conservation in the 21st century is great and complex, but we believe that challenge can be met. We understand that the language of crisis and emergency has a role in inspiring action, but, for those wanting to act, and for those already actively engaged, working constantly in such a context can be constraining and often overwhelming. We recognise the power of hope as a potent enabling force, and sometimes as a necessary guard against anxiety and despair. We are an international team working with a worldwide community of individuals and organisations to inspire and enable a global effort – towards a sustainable future in which everyone can thrive.

As we dive into 2025 and all the positive changes it will bring, let's take a moment to celebrate some inspiring conservation successes of 2024 highlighted by Conservation Optimism. Nine countries unite to protect endangered river dolphins, creating safe habitats and advancing research to halt their decline. Nepal celebrates a tiger population that tripled from 112 to 335! With 66 hectares of restored forest and 40,000+ community members involved, this is a game-changer. Indigenous leaders in the Pacific grant whales legal personhood, a bold move to protect these majestic creatures and press governments to take action. The Iberian lynx has officially bounced back! Numbers have doubled, and the species is no longer considered endangered after years of dedicated conservation efforts. UNESCO adds 6 new natural World Heritage Sites, preserving some of the planet's most unique ecosystems, from pristine peat bogs to remote species hotspots. Major win for Siamese crocodiles in Cambodia! 60 hatchlings were born in Cardamom National Park, giving hope for the survival of this critically endangered species. 1,000 rescued lemurs and tortoises are heading back to their rightful home in Madagascar, marking a triumph for wildlife protection and restoration. Rangers in the DRC are turning the “triangle of death” into a thriving wildlife reserve, proving that even the most challenging areas can recover with dedication and support. Let's carry this momentum into 2025! Second significant good news from Buglife this week! I've been avoiding the news this week between the inauguration and Musk-related articles but the news about the London resort and this fantastic news about our government's decision to refuse neonicotinoid use this year is very welcome. Huge thank you and congrats to the teams working on this 😁 #GoodNews #ConservationOptimism Conservation Optimism
🌍💚 Breaking the January norm: we've got good news for the environment! For the past few years, January has seen the approval of banned pesticides for use in sugar beet crops. The harmful effects of neonicotinoids have been known for over a decade and the agricultural sector has been encouraged to find alternative, more environmentally friendly ways to manage threats to crops. The reliance on emergency derogations has appeared to prevent progress. But that changes in 2025! The refusal of this years application will promote more sustainable farming practices, encourage the use of safer alternatives, and help protect nature. The routine approval of these harmful and unnecessary chemicals is a now thing of the past. 🙌 Thanks to the hard work and dedication of all involved. https://lnkd.in/eyk_iVqM

Never underestimate the positive impact your individual actions might have, because you can be sure that there are many other individuals and communities out there with the same commitment, striving to do exactly the same. This article, written by James Munyawera and shared by Conservation Optimism highlights the power of collective action when it comes to protecting the future of biodiversity. He draws parallels between a project in the UK which he visited, the Knepp Rewilding Project, and the Volcanoes National Park expansion project where he works, in Rwanda.
