A holistic approach to human-wildlife conflict in Namibia One of the biggest challenges facing the people in the Orupupa Conservancy in Namibia’s Kunene Highlands is the continued human-wildlife conflict caused mostly by elephants damaging water infrastructure and destroying vegetable gardens. People, livestock, and elephants rely on the same natural springs and diesel, engine-operated boreholes that are costly to run and, as such, often run dry. Elephants then cause damage in their efforts to access borehole Infrastructure and reservoirs. After converting the diesel waterpoint pumps to solar energy, elephants were seen on camera traps drinking from the full reservoir, and no elephants tried to climb into it. Human-elephant conflict over vegetable gardens in Ekoto Village was drastically reduced after a new game-proof electric fence was erected around the communal gardens. The production and diversification of crops are increasing and breathing new life into the elephant, livestock, and human communities in the conservancy. We are deeply grateful to the Kunene Highland communities for their trust, collaboration, and innovation in fostering peaceful coexistence with wildlife. Charting a course for conservation capacity building We recently conducted a two-day virtual Geographic Information System (GIS) course for our landscape partners at Tondwa Conservation Limited (TCL) Mutundu Camp, led by our GIS and Planning Manager, Tammy Bean. The training brought together dedicated professionals from the Nsumbu Tanganyika Conservation Programme, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, and the Department of Forestry to focus on essential GIS skills, including spatial data management, QGIS software navigation, and thematic map creation. This initiative, funded by JRS Biodiversity Foundation, is part of our broader project, "Advancing Community Conservation Management through Integrated Habitat Monitoring in Northern Zambia GMAs". This training aimed to build capacity among our landscape partners to use GIS tools effectively and incorporate the land cover vegetation map produced in the project to support the collaborative work in the landscape. As Fred Mumba (Forester, Dept of Forestry, Nsama District) noted: “Thank you, Conserve Global, for inviting me as an officer to participate in this GIS training. Conserve's Director of Impact, Harriet Davies-Mostert and Project Manager, Cameroon, Fanny P. attended the National Dialogue Workshop on Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) this week. According to the IUCN, OECMs are geographically defined areas distinct from traditional Protected Areas (PAs) but managed in ways that yield positive, sustained, and long-term outcomes for biodiversity conservation, including associated ecosystem functions, services, and, when applicable, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic, and other locally significant values. Thank you to the IUCN and Lisima Foundation for hosting a successful and productive workshop.

Exciting news from Conserve Global! We're thrilled to introduce Wesley Gold, our new Project Manager for the R1 block in Niassa Special Reserve, Mozambique. With a rich background in conservation and security, Wesley brings a unique perspective to our team. Wesley's journey to conservation is inspiring. From a decade in the British military to anti-poaching operations in the Serengeti, he will lead our project in one of Africa's most remote and stunning landscapes. He will focus on building strong community relationships while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding ecosystem and biodiversity. Wesley's approach combines military expertise with a deep understanding of local needs - a perfect fit for our mission. From scratch, Wesley will set up management structures and infrastructure in this untouched area. He's excited about the challenge, especially the opportunity to partner with local communities, help them overcome challenges, and protect the land they depend on.
