Developers of Optioneer - rapid AI-powered optioneering for linear infrastructure
About us
Tackling decarbonisation and the transition to net zero means radically transforming the vast network of energy infrastructure which makes the modern world go. To meet this unprecedented challenge, we need to build considerably more infrastructure at an unprecedented pace. The planning of new linear infrastructure projects is often lengthy and requires taking into account a multitude of technical considerations and reconciling the often competing viewpoints of various stakeholders. At Continuum Industries, we aim to accelerate the world’s transition to renewable energy by enabling faster, lower-risk and more environmentally conscious project development for power, utility and renewables companies. Our solution, Optioneer™, leverages geospatial data combined with design and planning rules and tests millions of potential routing alternatives against project-specific environmental, social, cost and technical considerations. Our AI-powered platform generates a shortlist of tailored options, in just a few hours. Using Optioneer’s user-friendly interface, the project team is able to compare and evaluate the shortlisted routes against key performance indicators, iterate when new data arises and keep a record of key decisions made during the process. Optioneer drives efficiencies across every project, streamlining collaboration and facilitating more dynamic engagement with stakeholders. It's time to make infrastructure projects work smarter, not harder.

Existing design approaches to linear assets are geared towards quickly identifying a feasible option early in the design phase and then uncovering problems and proposing solutions to them during more detailed design. However, as linear assets are increasing in their complexity and end-clients want more certainty early in the design phase to lower construction risk, the status quo is clearly not sustainable. Optioneer offers a new approach to desktop optioneering studies for linear infrastructure. It lets project teams automate the existing optioneering process, efficiently capture a high level of geospatial and engineering detail and iterate through thousands of design options to find the best ones.

Elia Group isn't accepting the status quo of how infrastructure is currently developed, so they are leveraging new technologies to accelerate its capital delivery programme We're thrilled to have received the endorsement of their C-suite team to deploy our Optioneer software across the group This isn't just about automated routing though It's about transforming the entire project development process All the way through network planning, portfolio screening, routing, option selection, stakeholder engagement, iteration, preparation of environmental impact assessment documents and defending decisions in court if challenged It's about taking projects from concept to permit as fast as possible, at the lowest possible risk And doing that repeatedly across the entire portfolio For the next 25 years Until we have fully transitioned to clean energy

Keeping your project team aligned shouldn’t feel like herding cats. But with long email threads, scattered spreadsheets, and missed updates, it often does. This chaos isn’t just frustrating—it’s holding the industry back In transmission project development, effective, detailed communication is critical to ensure alignment and accountability at every stage The Project Management Institute claims that 56% of project failures come down to poor communication And yet, we’re still relying on tools that were never meant for the complexity of what project development teams face along dozens, if not hundreds, of miles of potential routes We think it's time for a change. Time for project teams to have the right tools to stay connected and informed, without the email overload Creating a clear decision-making trail is key, allowing project proposals to be defended later during permitting Last year, we put communication in the context of the maps, the data behind them, the stakeholder inputs, and the past decisions This has been one of the most engaging functionalities for our users—they have been collaborating by leaving tens of thousands of comments in their project spaces But they kept missing critical updates So we've fixed it and users now get notified when they are tagged on something that requires their attention Link to a blog post in the chat Let’s leave the email chaos behind

Visual impacts often delay transmission projects, so here is a way to reduce the impacted area by 49% Most of the time, visual impact is considered early on when planning new transmission lines But properly calculating the impacted areas tends to be time-consuming, so it isn't properly modeled until the routes are pretty clear Why? Because modeling viewsheds for dozens of routes takes a fair bit of time using tools based on conventional platforms like ArcGIS This example shows that doing routing without considering visual impact models results in routes that impact areas almost 2x larger That means that routing with proper visual impact models from the beginning reduces the impacts by 49% Reducing the number of impacted properties, residents, and viewpoints And minimizing the probability of the project being challenged and delayed during the permitting How do we do this? Continuum Industries' Optioneer was built specifically for linear projects and can handle all of the constraints from the very beginning The video shows the iterative process of exploring approximately 900k route alternatives Each of the 900k routes is assessed from the perspective of visual impact, permitting, environmental impact, constructability, and cost (the project in the video is not a real project)
