  • An enlarged prostate is where the prostate, a small gland found near a man's bladder, increases in size. Although it can cause problems, an enlarged prostate is not usually a serious threat to a man’s health. The symptoms of an enlarged prostate are similar to the symptoms associated with prostate cancer. This is why it’s important to look out for the signs and symptoms, and seek medical advice if you experience any of them. Having an enlarged prostate doesn’t mean you have prostate cancer, or that you are at a greater risk of developing cancer. The condition tends to affect men over the age of 50. • Helen was diagnosed with mouth cancer at the age of 65, when a routine dental appointment flagged a sore that was unusual. In August last year, she was referred to Cromwell Hospital where a specialist team, including surgeons Mr Rafal Niziol and Mr Alastair Fry, performed a complex surgical procedure to remove the cancer. Helen underwent what she described as an intensive 8-hour surgery that involved removing her upper teeth, reconstructing her jaw with part of her fibula bone, and grafting skin from her leg to form a new palate. Following the surgery, Helen spent five days in intensive care. “My son and his wife flew from LA and stayed near the hospital. The wonderful nurses let them sit with me from 8am until 7pm every day during a week of bed rest.” Helen describes the whole experience as a “surreal moment” in her life and speaks of the “walking angels” in the ICU with immense admiration and gratitude. “I’ll forever be grateful to Rafal, Alastair, and the entire team at Cromwell Hospital. I don’t have enough words to express how incredible, kind and caring they are.” Read more of Helen's story: bit.ly/3EOUJbC Patients can make an appointment with our leading Head and Neck team by calling our team: 020 7244 4886 Bupa Dental Care UK
