There’s lots to think about when you are recruiting new staff and it’s important to remember that thorough and robust pre-employment checks will help you to confirm the suitability of your potential new hires as well as protect your business from potential risks. In order to make well informed recruitment decisions and ensure legal compliance these are the checks you should be carrying out: 🔍 Identity verification – Make sure to the best of your ability that the candidate is who they say they are. Check a range of documents for consistency of information. 🛂 Right To Work – As an employer you are legally responsible for checking and keeping a record of your employees’ proof of right to work in the UK. Employers can be fined, face criminal prosecution and even a jail sentence if they permit illegal working. 🦹♂️ Criminal Records Checks – These checks aren’t necessary for all roles but if you operate in sectors such as care, health and education then these checks will be required as part of your recruitment process and will be audited if you are visited by regulatory bodies such as the CQC and Ofsted. ✅ References & Employment History – Whilst a lot of references these days only provide limited information they at least help to confirm previous employment history and you can check that this information matches with what the candidate has provided on their CV or application form. 📜 Qualifications & Licences – If the role you are hiring for requires a particular qualification or licence then it is vital to check for proof of that so you know that your new hire has the competencies you need.
