Each year, the World Economic Forum publish their Global Risk Report which forms the basis of the debate amongst the most influential corporate and political global leaders in Davos. It's not a surprise that climate change risks have risen to the top of the list, both in a 2 and 10 year outlook. We've identified the risks, now we need solutions. It's the right year to bring carbon removals to the conversation in Davos. See you there.

We’re excited to announce that Pension Insurance Corporation plc has signed its second deal with CUR8 to help address their operational emissions. Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC), a specialist insurer, has purchased +800 tonne carbon removal portfolio, neutralising the fit-out of their new 22 Ropemaker Street offices in London. PIC has taken a proactive approach to managing their net zero risk by designing a highly energy-efficient building that minimises operational carbon emissions. This portfolio of carbon removals aligns with emerging best practices for net-zero offsetting of embodied carbon in the real estate sector by the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and the newly revised Oxford Offsetting Principles (by Oxford Net Zero). CUR8 will manage a diverse portfolio of removal credits that consists of five leading global projects across the spectrum of nature-based to human-engineered, such as: 1PointFive, a global direct air capture (DAC) leader set to have the world’s first plant capable of reaching megatonne scale; and Carboneers, an Indian biochar initiative with strong social and community co-benefits. Alongside this, they will use CUR8's proprietary Credit Management Platform to ensure that their portfolio delivers on PIC’s sustainability goals. PIC first purchased carbon removal credits earlier in 2024 to remove business travel emissions from previous years. Cléo Fitzsimons Cameron Scott Dominique Airey

As the first-ever sports buyer of carbon removals, we have signed our third deal with CUR8 to deepen our climate commitment. 🌎 London Marathon Events will purchase 1,935 tonnes of carbon removals from the global carbon removals market maker. 🏃➡️ We're thrilled to announce that London Marathon Events (LME), have signed their third portfolio deal with CUR8! LME have been a step ahead of the rest since they became the world's first sports organisation to invest in carbon removals in 2022. This third deal, which will take 1,935 tonnes of CO₂ out of the atmosphere, brings their total removals purchase to just under 3,000 tonnes of CO₂. At CUR8, we’ve procured and will manage a diverse portfolio made up of six projects that run the spectrum from nature-based to human-engineered. These include: 🌱 Carboneers, which turn agricultural waste into biochar in India, to the benefit of local communities. 🪨 InPlanet, which uses enhanced rock weathering in Brazil to lock away CO₂ for good. 💨 1PointFive, which is set to be the first company to deploy direct air capture (DAC) technology at megatonne scale. LME, which have set themselves the target of reaching net zero by 2030, have consistently shown commitment to scale the carbon removal market. They set a powerful example for sports organisations worldwide! 👉 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/eHt2Y7S4 Kate Chapman, Penny Dain

📰 It was great to sit down with Jamie Hailstone from Forbes and discuss 'the space race of the 21st century' - carbon removal. We spoke about the sheer diversity of CDR types and why we need to invest in every pathway to tackle the challenge at scale, across novel, human-engineered pathways, and nature based, including the ones that use '350-million-year-old technology', as Kristjan Lepik from Arbonics beautifully framed it. 🏃♀️ Portfolio approach is the one taken by London Marathon Events, working with CUR8 to secure the largest-ever carbon removal portfolio purchase from a sports organisation. The the first sporting organisation to invest in carbon removal, LME is a great example of committment to a mission – getting people to run – but delivering that in a way that won’t negatively impact the planet. In the race to net zero, they’re setting the standard. 👉 Check out the article here here: https://lnkd.in/dRb-nxUj #lme #londonmarathon #cdr #climate

British Airways has been actively investing in carbon removals since 2018, and in September 2024, it became the largest airline purchaser of carbon removal credits, acquiring 33,000 tonnes through CUR8. In a discussion between Carrie Harris, Director of Sustainability at British Airways, and Marta Krupinska, Co-Founder and CEO of CUR8, they emphasised the importance of carbon removals in mitigating aviation's environmental impact. 📰 I wrote for ESG Today about how the need for carbon removal is no longer a matter of speculation; it’s a necessity to survive in a net zero world. Companies are actively seeking scalable, high-quality carbon removal (CDR) solutions – and a string of recent purchases from British Airways, Microsoft, Google and Airbus all prove this. Spreading impact and risk across a portfolio of removals from nature-based to human-engineered is key. With demand expected to surge as we inch closer to 2030 interim net zero targets, companies are securing supply and preferential prices today. To help companies get started, novel financing mechanisms like our partnership with Standard Chartered are making it easier to invest without faring 100% of the costs upfront, while also providing the carbon removal projects with capital to scale. The message is clear: the future belongs to those who act now. Carbon removals are an ‘unavoidable’. They’re a major pathway to a sustainable future. Thanks to the team at ESG Today!
