With 1,300 incidents a day in the UK, the levels of crime against retail workers is completely unacceptable. This #RespectforShopworkersWeek, we spoke to Matthew Speight to find out more about this priority area of his. “Colleague safety is a huge priority of mine. It was great to see the Government focus on this issue in the budget last week, taking a stronger approach to dealing with those who think it’s acceptable to shoplift and behave aggressively or violently towards our teams. “We are always looking at improving prevention – but the harsh reality is we will never be able to stop it completely. We will continue to make it very difficult for those who think it’s acceptable to be aggressive towards colleagues and other customers when stealing from us. “So, it’s timely that this week is Respect for Shopworkers Week. Whilst the week, rightfully so, highlights the importance, for me it’s about ensuring our teams are respected every day they come to work.
