How to Start a Career in Cybersecurity in 2025 Starting a career in cybersecurity is both rewarding and in high demand. Here is a simple breakdown of how you can start: 1. Understand the Basics: Learn networking, operating systems, and programming basics. Take advantage of free resources on Cisco Networking Academy, Udemy, ISC2. Also YouTube can help you build foundational knowledge. 2. Choose a Specialization: Focus on high-demand areas such as: Network Security: Protecting network infrastructures. Application Security: Securing software applications. Incident Response: Managing cyberattacks. Cloud Security: Securing cloud infrastructures. Penetration Testing: Ethical hacking for vulnerabilities. Read up on any of these areas, take practice labs, read and practice, read and practice. Be consistent 3. Gain Experience: Look out for Internships, practice using labs, Take up available challenges like Capture-The-Flag (CTF) competitions on TryHackMe to sharpen your skills. 4. Pursue Certifications Certifications are key to standing out. You can start out with certifications like: CC by ISC2 (the certification is free as of this post) CompTIA Security+ CompTIA, etc Don't just write and pass exams, understand the concept and how to use it in a work environment. 5. Bonus point: join a cybersecurity community. Follow accounts that post resources and internship opportunities that can help you grow. Don't learn in isolation. You can follow great accounts like Olúmáyòwá Akinkuehinmi , CyBlack , Confidence Staveley , and many more. Cybersecurity offers endless growth opportunities, and with the right skills and certifications, you’ll grow your career. Sometimes, we think we understand the meaning of certain words...until we experience those words in real time. One word I came to understand last year is - privilege. Thanks to CyBlack! I consider it a tremendous privilege to have been a part of the 2024 cohort of interns who were given a chance to gain real world #cybersecurity skills. Because of the internship, I have gained technical and soft skills in the cybersecurity space that I am proud of. We had six sprints (#CyberThreatIntelligence, #GRC, #CloudSecurity, #HumanFactor, #SOC, #EthicalHacking) and I am excited to share my contributions, the skills I have gained and the lessons I have learned so far. The internship was stretching but like Martha Obineche said, it was absolutely rewarding. Thank you so much to the team at CyBlack. Thank you to my mentors, Dr Iretioluwa Akerele Dave Anifowoshe Ridwan Aiyedun for this enriching experience. Thank you to my amazing team members EseAbasi Ekanem Nike Nsikak-Nelson Omachoko Yakubu Martha Obineche Ayokunle Ojowa, PMP®Victor Adegbite kayode Adewole Mariam Olagunju for the awesome teamwork and collaboration. I am so grateful. 🙏 PS: Here's my #CyBlackInternshipWrapped in a carousel. Enjoy!
