The second week of the year is antibiogram week. All of the tail end of last year’s specimens have been processed and their susceptibility results are ready for analysis. Looking forward to using the AMR package (https://lnkd.in/ewAn7Xxj) authored by Matthijs Berends and his colleagues at University of Groningen. I wonder how antimicrobial resistance over the last 12 months compares with 2023. Watch this space! Very encouraging to see the #EU launch its first-ever advance market commitment for #antibiotic development! This €40 million pilot initiative is a significant step toward addressing the critical market barriers for new antibiotics, particularly focusing on smaller member states. By ensuring the availability of Vabomere (a combination of meropenem and vaborbactam used to treat complicated UTIs) across 21 participating countries, this program not only supports antibiotic innovation but also demonstrates a novel funding mechanism that could transform the landscape. This initiative follows the example set by the UK with its Netflix-style subscription model for antibiotics, where the NHS pays a fixed annual fee for access to new antibiotics, ensuring a guaranteed return for pharmaceutical companies. Such innovative funding mechanisms are crucial for driving investment into advanced diagnostics, including antimicrobial susceptibility testing (#AST), which is essential for effective treatment and combating antimicrobial resistance. Kudos to the European Union and the Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (#HERA) for pioneering such an initiative. Let’s hope this is just the beginning and that we will see more substantial investments and scaling up of such programs in the near future. Today marks the end of a journey with my MSc interns Sarah Russell and Joann Miriam Paul from Coventry University. Over the past 6 months, I'm thankful for the privilege of being their manager and witnessing their growth and creativity firsthand. Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the Plug and Play Silicon Valley Winter Summit as part of the WMHTIA delegation. It was an amazing experience to connect with other startups, corporate partners, and investors while gaining valuable insights into the Silicon Valley ecosystem. Cytecom collaborated with Medilink Midlands to mark the 3rd Annual Innovations Against AMR Event, held today at Enterprise Wharf in Birmingham, during World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (#WAAW). This year’s event centered on the theme “#Educate. #Advocate. #Act now” and brought together innovators, SMEs, researchers, and stakeholders to share advancements in combating antimicrobial resistance (#AMR). It was an incredible opportunity to discover cutting-edge solutions, foster collaborations, and advocate for best practices to address this global health challenge. As a key partner of this event, Cytecom showcased our work in rapid bacterial detection methods, aligning with our mission to fight AMR through innovative diagnostics.
