Last week I spoke at the EU Bioplastics conference in Berlin. I’m not a regular at plastics events, but I talked about sugar availability as a feedstock for fermentation to make bioplastics. We normally think of sugar as a food. But in the coming years this could change. GLP-1 agonist drugs are becoming widespread, changing food consumption patterns. The world’s demographics are also changing and global population could peak in the next few decades. Sugar is “empty calories”, pure carbohydrate with no nutrition. That’s bad news if you’re a human with a sweet tooth. But it's good news if you’re a cane or beet farmer because you grow an energy crop, and the world needs cheap renewable energy. Using sugar as a feedstock to make renewable and biodegradable plastics is part of sugar’s future, alongside other uses like ethanol for road fuel and sustainable aviation fuel. I spoke on how and where sugar is produced, how it’s consumed and how much it generally costs to procure. My first, but hopefully not my last, plastics event.

What is sugar used for? Sugar isn’t just food. It’s also used as a feedstock to make ethanol for fuel or industry. Sugar can also be used to make bioplastics, jet fuel and other industrial goods.
