Despite some welcome investments in education, the Budget announced yesterday was otherwise pretty light in relation to babies, children and young people. It lacked solutions to the deeply rooted problems that are preventing children and young people thriving. However, given the depths of these issues and the diversity of ways in which they manifest for people and communities across the country – Westminster can only ever be part of the response. It's now clear that the focus for local authorities and health systems across the UK will revolve around how to best use existing local resources to contribute to missions set by government, making them meaningful and impactful at a local level. A one-size-fits-all approach will not cut it. We need locally nuanced, equitable policy, research and practice. Read our ideas for how local leaders can translate policy directives into practice, grounded in place and community, without any significant new money. To know more about our approach and our thinking, get in touch with Tim Hobbs, Arielle Garton and Julie Harris today. #children #families #communities #policy #practice #budget #government #localauthority #research #evaluation #livedexperience #design #newsletter #response #thoughtleadership #thinkpiece

About us
The Dartington Service Design Lab is an independent research charity, committed to improving outcomes for children and young people by improving the systems and services that support them. We apply research and best evidence to everyday practice and balance this with the involvement of those people using and delivering services. We believe it is critical to situate services in the context of the complex and messy systems in which they are delivered – be these public agencies or local communities. The Lab works with charities, local authorities, and funders to help them strengthen the design and delivery of what they do, and their understanding of how to further improve.

To drive real, lasting change for children, young people and families, we need to understand not only what is effective but also how to create positive effects, as well as for whom it works and whether it is being applied as intended. But assessing the ‘how’ part is much more complex than just investigating the ‘what’. Youth Futures Foundation has commissioned Dartington Service Design Lab and the Centre for Evidence and Implementation to help with this challenge, through developing Theory-Informed Implementation and Process Evaluation guidance. Read more about this project: https://lnkd.in/gP5fbgD6 The goal is to inform and guide more rigorous #evaluation #methodology, rooted in the latest theories, models and frameworks of #ImplementationScience and #ProgramTheory.
To drive real, lasting change, we need to understand not only what is effective but also how it works to create positive effects, as well as for whom it works, and whether it is being applied as intended. But assessing the ‘how’ part is much more complex than just investigating the ‘what’. Youth Futures Foundation commissioned CEI and our partners at Dartington Service Design Lab to help with this challenge, through developing Theory-Informed Implementation and Process Evaluation guidance. Read more about this project: https://lnkd.in/gP5fbgD6 “Implementation and process evaluation (IPE) is the term used to describe research that determines whether an activity has been implemented as intended and how it worked, if indeed it was successful,” explains CEI Principal Advisor, Dr Stephanie Smith. “Evaluating program implementation involves interrogating whether, how and how successfully the intended activities were brought into practical operation, how they aligned with program theory, as well as how they interact with the context in which they operate.” The goal is to inform and guide more rigorous evaluation methodology, rooted in the latest theories, models and frameworks of #ImplementationScience and #ProgramTheory. As the year rapidly draws to a close, the team at CEI is reflecting on our 2024.
