Enter Deep Blue BioTech, a UK-based startup pioneering sustainable chemical production using photosynthesis-driven biomanufacturing. Founded in 2023, the company is leveraging cyanobacteria (commonly known as blue-green algae) to create cost-effective, environmentally friendly "green chemicals." Co-founder Manuel Rios Krauss emphasizes their mission: “We create that new generation of sustainable materials, new generation of green chemicals, that are environmentally conscious — but mainly they are superior in functionality.” Their first target? The beauty and cosmetics industry, with hyaluronic acid as the debut product. This approach not only removes CO2 through photosynthesis but also achieves high efficiency using a recently discovered strain of cyanobacteria with three times the growth rate and seven times the productivity of others. Backed by $800,000 in pre-seed funding, including Innovate UK grants, Deep Blue BioTech is poised to scale its modular, photobioreactor-based system for faster commercialization. With potential expansion into textiles and beyond, the startup is driving both sustainability and performance in chemical production. Her career journey has taken her to 10 laboratories across 4 countries, equipping her with exceptional adaptability, problem-solving skills, strategic planning abilities, and a global perspective. Maria Lucia’s diverse international experiences have sharpened her interpersonal skills and collaborative approach, making her a natural fit for our dynamic team. This week I attended The Drop in Malmö for the first time. I found it to be a truly one-of-a-kind event, and everything I heard about it before probably didn’t do it justice. Kudos to Hampus Jakobsson and Joel Larsson for this amazing couple of days, you created something unique indeed! I particularly engaged with a topic very close to my heart: how we can finally move into the acceleration phase of the #BioEconomy. I attended a brilliant session by Max Mundt & Christian Gonzalez, PhD on this. Max's post this morning provided an excellent perspective on the differences between pioneering bio𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘴 and bio𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 (https://lnkd.in/dXBBaHkZ), complementing the discussions from the session. 💡 Here are my key takeaways: 🥇 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆—a bioeconomy poster child—that makes the benefits and potential clear to everyone. This, for me, is where the tipping point begins. 📉 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. It won’t be solved by one startup alone, but rather through the alignment of many interconnected pieces. An interdisciplinary mindset and collaboration at the core of this new generation of startups will be essential. 🎭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲/𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲/𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴. There are more parameters to consider, and a continuum exists where industries like Beauty & Personal Care can move from kilos to tons. Partnering with the right industry will be key to this journey. Looking at you Rushad Nanavatty. All in all, the event had incredible content, people, and conversations. One keynote title and one session particularly stood out for me: Chido Govera led a beautiful session on her foundation,The Future of Hope Foundation. I love what they’re doing to support and mentor vulnerable members of society through entrepreneurship. When I left, I couldn’t stop thinking about the phrase 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 itself—about our role in creating a vision of the future, one where we all can project and see ourselves thriving. At the end of the day, all this discussion about tools, science, technology and frameworks should not overshadow the "𝘸𝘩𝘺" behind our efforts. #TheDrop #BioEconomy

Very excited to share that I just joined Cohort 2.0 of Science Creates Engineering Biology Accelerator Programme representing Deep Blue BioTech. This is the only UK-wide accelerator dedicated to supporting entrepreneurial scientists in #EngineeringBiology, and it is delivered in partnership with UK Research and Innovation. This week I have been in Bristol for a 5-day Founder Bootcamp and the program will run over the next 9-weeks with opportunity to access equity-free funding at the end of the program while also engaging and gaining insights from leading-VCs in the deep tech space like Deep Science Ventures and SCVC. I’m amazed by the innovative and scientific genius of my fellow innovators in this journey. We are particularly proud as this reinforces the relevance of our #Cyanobacteria technology platform to deliver UK’s national vision for Engineering Biology and the big impact we can make through our superior #GreenChemicals in the marketplace and mainly for the planet.
