 While international leaders gather this week to discuss global climate policy and financing, we hosted a #G20 side event in Rio de Janeiro that focused on a critical piece of the puzzle: the role of development banks in delivering impactful climate solutions on the ground. In partnership with the Institute for Climate and Society, Instituto Talanoa, and Open Society Foundations, we convened this discussion to highlight how regional development banks can make financing work for local needs. As world leaders discuss ambitious targets, like the UK’s new commitment to cut emissions by 81% by 2035, and major lenders set goals to increase climate finance for low- and middle-income countries, our panel addressed the crucial question of how these funds reach and benefit communities in real, tangible ways. The panel featured Gabriela Vichi de Almeida, CP³P-F, Director of Operations at the Espírito Santo Development Bank, and André Santanna, Climate Intelligence Manager at the Brazilian National Development Bank, who shared insights on the essential role of development banks in translating high-level commitments into action. Key Takeaways: Regional development banks are vital to making climate funding accessible and relevant. With local knowledge and connections, these banks work with state and municipal governments to prioritize climate interventions that address specific regional challenges. Aligning financing with national and regional climate strategies maximizes impact. Ensuring that funds are directed toward goals set by national and state climate plans helps drive meaningful change. Supporting project development and financing access is critical. Development banks can bridge gaps by offering guarantees, risk mitigation tools, and support for project planning, helping local organizations turn climate goals into actionable projects. With high-stakes climate discussions continuing, events like this underscore the importance of local action and proactive management in climate finance.

As COP29 brings the world together to address urgent climate and sustainability challenges, we're reminded of the vital work we're doing with Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF) across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Through this partnership, Delivery Associates is helping communities build resilience and create sustainable solutions to improve lives and livelihoods in the face of climate change. In collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, our team is implementing a results-based management system that empowers nutrition, malaria elimination, rural electrification, agriculture value chains, and local economic growth projects—many of which directly contribute to climate resilience. 👏 A huge thank you to our team members who are leading design sprints, building data infrastructure, and working on the ground to set up and monitor projects across nine countries, including Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Senegal, Mali, and Uganda. We're proud to have recently co-organized the first Delivery Units gathering for Latin America and the Caribbean with Peru's Office of the Prime Minister. This landmark event brought together key leaders across 12 countries, uniting our efforts to turn ambitious goals into everyday realities. Following the conference, we led a three-day, hands-on program for members of The Bahamas' Prime Minister's Delivery Unit, immersing in Peru's best practices and fostering rich exchanges. It's exciting to see the strength and adaptability of the Deliverology approach and its proven effectiveness across diverse contexts, from the Caribbean to Latin America and beyond. At Delivery Associates, we know that driving impact at scale requires both science and art—rooted in data, strategy, and a deep respect for local insights. At the World Health Summit, Romina Genovesi, Project Leader in Europe, and Kate Epstein, Associated Director for the APAC region, facilitated a workshop alongside Novo Nordisk. The session brought together international organizations, philanthropies, and researchers to tackle one critical question: What will it take to significantly improve child health in disadvantaged urban communities over the next three years? Key insights from the session included: Understand the Context 🌍 Successful interventions start with a deep understanding of the community—its champions, decision-making ecosystem, and local settings. Knowing these factors allows us to design solutions that are relevant and sustainable. Bring the Community Along in the Journey 🤝 Early and ongoing engagement with local champions and stakeholders is critical. By building on existing partnerships and allowing local decision-makers to shape interventions, we ensure community ownership and lasting impact. Build Momentum 📊 Quick wins in settings like schools can create immediate structural changes while framing communications around community values and using evidence-based stories to generate the buy-in needed for long-term success. We know this is just the beginning and excited to use these takeaways to guide the continued work through the COPI (Childhood Obesity Prevention Initiative) project, as we strive to drive better health outcomes for children worldwide.

Last week, we attended the World Health Summit (WHS) in Berlin. With over 60 sessions uniting global leaders across sectors, the event focused on some of the most pressing health challenges. A few key takeaways stood out for us at Delivery Associates: 🎯 Digital Health: As digital innovations redefine healthcare delivery, the real challenge is making these solutions accessible to all. What does an equitable digital transformation look like, and how do we ensure no one is left behind? ⚖️ Health and Equity: From women’s and children’s health to the intersection of climate and health, equity remains a cornerstone of the conversation. How do we sustain efforts to close the gap and ensure health for all—especially the most vulnerable? 💡 Localization and Urgency: Community-based solutions are crucial in addressing urban health challenges.
