This week, in partnership with the Financial Times, we hosted an exclusive panel discussion and dinner to tackle the complex legal issues surrounding the energy transition. The event provided the opportunity for us speak with clients to understand the challenges and opportunities they face as they navigate the energy transition. Top three takeaways: • The energy transition is causing new stresses on energy transmission systems, with a variety of countries facing 10+ year grid connection delays. • We don't have the luxury of time – at the current pace, 2030 targets looking challenging to meet. However, there was optimism that the targets could still be met if the ecosystem works together to unblock the bottlenecks. • Everyone needs to be brought along in this transition. We need to make sure people don’t fall into fuel poverty, especially during the current cost of living crisis – innovation and creative incentives need to be embraced. A landmark investment in Romania’s energy security, EnergoNuclear signed an engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) contract for the advancement of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant Units in Romania. Signed with the FCSA Joint Venture during the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 29) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, the contract is valued at an estimated €3.2 billion. Once Units 3 and 4 are connected to the grid, nuclear energy will generate 66% of the country’s clean energy, reinforcing its essential role in the decarbonization process. A cross-border, multi-competency Dentons team from Romania, the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Belgium provided legal support to EnergoNuclear over the course of the two-and-a-half-year project. The team advised on highly complex infrastructure, public procurement, and competition law issues and supported the client in structuring, negotiating and drafting the EPCM agreement.
